I know everyone loves polls :p

So I’m back on the Grizzly Drum/Box magazine idea, and I need some input before I go on. I’m making these for myself, but since a lot of people are asking about these, I might be able to make a few extra for sale.

I had a few questions.

How many rounds should it hold? I know the obvious answer is 50! lol. 25 would be nice too, one box of ammo. But think about how heavy these would be, and how big I would have to make them.

Do you think 15 would be enough? Or should I aim for 20?

Now onto cost, how much would someone be willing to pay for a RELIABLE 15/20 round drum/box magazine? My goal is to make them available for under $80 each.

I’m thinking metal side walls with diffused clear lexan front and back. Easy hex screw disassembly.

Any input would be great!

Thanks,
Matt

EDIT: Crap, I screwed up the poll, sorry guys. Just vote for the most important one in your opinion.

The diameter of 10 rounds is about 4.25" . Anything bigger and I think you will start hitting it with your forarm when cycling the action. Unless you go to a pistol foregrip, or make it asymetric like a snail mag.

I haven't bought the box mag grizzly (have a HP9 instead) mainly because the mags don't hold enough rounds to make it worthwhile in my opinion. If mags with 10 or more rounds were available I would pick up a grizzly and buy two mags.

If you can make them in the 15-20 capacity, either in a box-mag config or in an unobtrusive 15-20 drum that would still allow unencumbered cycling of the action, and feed reliably, then I will buy a mag-fed Grizzly just to buy these mags/drums. I too have held off on buying the mag-fed Grizzly for this reason.

x2.

Double stack would be very wide in a 12 gauge magazine though. With single stack a magazine will at least be somewhat similar to the profile of most AR magazines right?

I would vote for 15-20 rounds.

Right now the plan is Snail Drum mag, holding 18-20 rounds.

Double stack mag would have to be very long to hold 15+ rounds. Remember that the top 2" have to be single stack, in order to fit into the magwel, then there would need to be a fake round inside that will pivot into the single stack portion and push the last 2 rounds out.

Last idea, that im not too keen on, is a single stack U shape mag. About the length of an AR mag, twice as wide as the current grizzly magazines, and could hold UP to 12 rounds. Could also make it longer to hold more.

I'll try to keep you up to date. Ive drawn out several different designs and Im looking at possible issues, feeding, spring tension, jams, etc.

Thanks for the input guys. If you have any other suggestions, or things you would like to see, let me know.

tagged for interest. I don't have a griz mag, but if you make relaible larger cap mags for them i would be all over it like a fat kid on cake.

I have one, the magazine can be modded to hold 6 rounds. Plus one in the chamber of course. It would be nice to have a magazine that can hold more, but realistically you would need to be able to sell them for less than $80 IMO to be able to sell a large quantity of them.

I would like to suggest a possible coil pattern (as if the shells were on a belt that is rolled up) in a drum mag the size demonstrated in the pic. This would be the easiest way to maintain a large capacity as well as a compact size.

I also think these mags should be marked that they are designed for use in pump action mag fed shotguns. Like the LAR 15 mags that hold 10 rounds.
If Canada ammo ever brought in a mag fed cougar it would make these prohib and require them to be pinned to 5 thus defeating the purpose.
I really like this project and would be willing to pay 80-100 for a compact, reliable, sturdy drum mag.
I don't own a grizz-mag yet but it is going to be my next shotgun build and this would really make a shine.
