Do you think a 300 H&H magnum with some heavy bullets would kill a Grizzly easy? The 300 H&H is in the power range of a 30-06-300win mag ? Or would a marlin guide gun in 45-70 be a better choice?

The 300 H&H with a well-constructed 200 or 220 grain bullet would be just fine for grizzly medicine. They are not armor-plated, and the average grizzly is just not that big. I would feel confident with the old "ouch & ouch" so loaded. Eagleye.

Just Kidding...!

I never hunted bears and my neck of the woods there are only black bears... Who beat up my green bin and poop on my lawn!

I know a fellow who has shot four grizzlies - 3 were 1 shot kills and 1 had to be shot twice. He used a .300 Win Mag and 220gr Partitions for all of them. Like Eagleye said, they are not armour plated.

Get a 2 bore, and a wheelbarrow to carry it around. Even if they were armor plated you could still kill em with 17487 ft/lbs of energy.

Yes. Provided that you do your part and put the bullet where it needs to go.

Until the 1950s the hnterlands of northern and central BC were laced with trappers and prospectors who lived in their cabins in the bush year 'round. Many of them had contact with grizzly bears most of their lives and shot them with whatever rifle they had, often a 30-30.
I had a talk with one of these old timers in the bush about grizzly bears. He told me if you are hunting them, you should have at least a 303 British. I thought at the time there was nobody better that I could get accurate information from. As far as I know, the grizzly bears haven't changed there physical construction since then.

I carry a Marlin Guide Gun for protection/back up when guiding or packing in Grizzly country. I have never had to shoot one in self defense, but I feel very comfortable doing so should the need arise. If I was hunting grizzly I would carry my 30-06, as it is my favourite bolt gun. It also gives me a little more range. The 300 H&H would be perfectly capable of killing a Grizzly, and I suppose it would offer the same advantage over the Guide Gun which my 30-06 does. H4831 is right, grizzlies havn't changed since the .303 was king of the Canadian bush. Make a good shot with a properly constructed bullet from a 300 H&H and he's dead.

H4831 accurately pointed out that cartridges like the 30-30 and 303 Brit have taken countless grizzlies in Canada; and you can bet your house they weren't hot loaded with TSX's or anything of the sort. Most people spending lots of time on the land that were using these cartridges weren't (aren't) rolling in the cashola, and weren't (aren't) all caught up in using the newest, most expensive ammo around; they usually shot the cheapest ammo they could find.

300 H&H will more than do the job just fine, as long as you do your part.

What they did do was know their quarry and know their firearm.
