G'day!

I'm from near Ottawa. (Rural - Conservative - gun totin' Ottawa Valley! haha);)

I was wondering about grizzly hunting out west. Where to go? How much it costs for a non resident? Do I have to hunt with a guide? etc etc.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

You won't be going in AB.

Or go fishing around Kitimat and run into one of the damn bears! Or golfing at the Skeena Valley Golf course around the 15th hole - takes only five min. to run to the club house from there. :)

Maybe some information from people who actually know where us easterners CAN go would be helpful, as opposed to people telling us where we CAN'T!

Ive been thinking more and more about going up to the Yukon for a few weeks to hunt, sure would be a lifetime experience to hunt some of the creatures up there.

I totally agree with you. Costly, yes....but wow, I'm sure it'd be the experience of a lifetime.

I used to think that hunting whitetails, moose, bear etc (here in Ontario) would take care of my needs forever. But the more time passes, the bigger urge I have to hunt different places and different game. (Yukon, Africa etc)

It's a little difficult and expensive for the non residents to hunt grizzly in B.C. too. B.C. hunting license for a Canadian, non-B.C. resident...$75.00, Species license fee for a non-B.C. resident to hunt grizzly...$1030.00. Plus, to hunt any big game, you must be accompanied by a B.C. licensed guide, or a B.C. resident who holds a Permit to Accompany. Beyond that, I think all grizzly hunts are on LEH (limited entry hunts...or draws), which are open only to residents. So really, the only way for a non-res. to hunt grizzly would be via a licensed guide who has been allocated a number of grizzly tags. By the time you pay for a guided hunt, you are talking about several thousand dollars in addition to your personal travel costs and license fees. By contrast, a resident pays for a hunting license...$32.00, a grizzly tag...$80.00, about $5.00 to enter the LEH draw, and then the cost of putting the hunt together, which can range anywhere from a few hundred on upwards.

B.C. and the Yukon are your only real options.Expect to pay in the neighbourhood of $10,000 or more for a grizzly hunt.

For that kind of bread, I could probably move there!!:p ;)

How bout Polar bears? Anyone hunt these beasts?

I would like to hunt those. I checked out the price on tags and they are cheap.

However, you (and I for that matter) run into the whole "resident" issue. Requiring a guide, etc. etc.

Unless someone you know can "guide" for you for free, you are looking at big fees again. Polar bear is definitivley on my list of animals I would like to hunt, right after grizzly and bison.

Here is a link to the tag prices for big game in the NWT:

http://www.nwtwildlife.rwed.gov.nt.ca/hunting/biggame.htm

This is a good government site with lots of info, just browse around.

Cheers,

Alex

Thanks for the link Alex!!

I'll check that out.

I think it'd be an exciting hunt. The whole "guide" thing is a piss-off though!

Guides?? We don need no stinking guides!!

Yiles, for that kind of cash I should just theoretically rent an apartment there and become a resident!! LOL

But this just gives me more of an incentive to move out west. I've been thinking about it for years, and this would be a definate perk. I can;t afford 10k for a grizzly hunt. For that kind of dough, im halfway to an African Safari!

In the yukon you can hunt grizz with an outfitter for around $7,000-10,000
or get a local to guide you.I'm not sure how it works in B.C.

C'mon Canuk!! Be nice.

As I'd mentioned in the past, it's not all easterners. In Ontario for instance, it's Toronto.
Outside rural Ontaio, there's alot of Conservative.
Now, whether Toronto wants to change is another story...you'd think with all the gun crime going on, they'd be thinking of change. Maybe they have faith that the "Great Canadian Gun Registry" will come and save them!!

BTW - How many crimes has that registry solved now?...AND...how many lives has it saved??? hmmmm

Yep, sounds like icedog pretty much summed it up. As far as BC goes, you'd have to use an outfitter and you're looking at about $7000-10,000 for a hunt in BC. Not sure about the Yukon/NWT, but I'd assume that you either have to be a resident or be guided.....
