Grizzly killed Calgary hunter

November 29, 2007 - 6:10 pm / b yShannon Morrow

It was a grizzly bear that killed a Calgary man hunting near Sundre.
The Medical Examiner's Office in Calgary confirmed this afternoon that 51 year old Don Peters was in fact mauled to death while in the backcountry over the weekend.
Searchers found the remains in dense bush yesterday. There had been evidence a bear was near the body.
The identification of the victim is still tentative, but police say Peters' rifle was found nearby. They add it had been fired.
Dave Ealey with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development tells 660News, they're doing ground and aerial searches to track and capture the grizzly. Once they catch the bear, a decision will be made on whether or not to put it down.
RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb says the victim's family is thanking the Search & Rescue units who took part in the search for Peters, as well as the volunteers and RCMP members who helped to give them closure. They're also thanking the nearby Mountain Aire Lodge.

Impossible....I read here on CGN that Yogi isn't interested in humans:rolleyes:

Bears are still out around here. I got stalked by one 2 weeks ago, and there were tracks in my driveway the other day...

A very unfortunate thing indeed, but then that is the risk that we take, isn't it? I'm sure we'll now hear all types of speculations as to what may have happened or how the drama unfolded. I guess that the only person that could tell us is now passed on to the great hunting grounds in the sky. At least I'll say this for him, although not at all comforting to those that will miss him, he died doing what he obviously loved to do. Better that then getting killed by a bus, aids, cancer or murderded on the streets. May he rest in peace. I hope they leave the bear alone as I'm sure he would. :(

Edit: His name was Don Allen Peters...God be with you brother.

It's a sad story. I see in one of the local rags that they are trying to hunt the bear down in a classic display of liberal wrong headedness.

RIP bro - sad to see and my thoughts will be with the family.

Still. As gitrdun said - at least he went doing what he loved.

They always destroy man-eaters. Bears can get a 'taste' for it apperently, or so the theory goes.

Man - i would not have bet a bear was awake at this time of year.

Bears just do what comes naturally, feed and fatten up before winter hibernation. But this is not necessarily the case. It has been said that he had fired a round. Maybe he saw the bear, got scared and put an ineffective round into him/her - wounding the animal. Maybe he steeped into the den, with the bear not fully into hibernation, who knows? When I hunt deep, deep woods, I'm on the lookout for a cougar. I think that I could deal with a bear much more easily than I could with a cat. But who knows for sure? As aware as I may be, I guess that I will have to deal with events as they happen. It make me feel pretty good that I am hunting in territory that I may be stalked by predators and that I am not the LONE hunter. What a feeling it is to be in the wild....wouldn't trade it for a minute of safety.

If ya gotta go, that's how I'd like it. Goin down with an empty one in the chamber.

Hits close to home as I hunt that exact area frequently and my neighbor was part of the search party. During summer my family including two small children camp there for a week (we take dogs and guns though). Saw 3 cougars out there just two weeks ago.

I was two hours late coming back from hunting today and the wife was in near hysterics. I told her "What are the odds of it happening twice?" I 'm sleeping on the couch tonight.:jerkit:

I guess that is the risk you take in hunting areas with big carnivorous predators skulking around.

Oh well. I'll tempt fate tomorrow. Found a fresh wolf kill (wild horse) on the last day of deer season today with at least 7 wolves feeding off it (found their beds nearby). Setting up a blind to watch over the carcass tomorrow evening. Now i will probably take the Benelli along too in case I need to do some "close" work.

Oh yeah. I rattled in and shot a decent five pointer (hence the two hours late).

PS. Gitrdun "gits" it and hit the nail on the head.

Older boar Grizz are still up at this time of year, actively seeking out den ed black bears for that last easy meal. I heard this may be true of old boar Black bears as well. Anyways if you bump into a bear this time of year (around here) it is going to be big and looking for meat. No more mr. clover eating nice guy, that stuff has long since turned brown.

BTW I saw grizz tracks in the snow last week.

It's a dimension of hunting that rarely enters my mind here in the not-so-remote bushes of southwestern Ontario.
My sympathies and thoughts are with the family as they manage through this terrible loss.
You guys and girls who have this to contend with while you hunt, take care out there.
By the way, has there ever been any kind of a tribute suggested for Hunters that we lose? Tragedy like this or just the passing of a friend from hunt camp, this might be an appropriate place for us to remember these folks. Any of the Mods want to weigh in?

This year I had no contact with bear, other than a blackie marking the tree where I hung my stand and I did see a few Grizz tracks. A bowhunter was attacked about a mile from where I was hunting(same day) and he fended the bear off by jamming an arrow in it. My buddy got chased from his sheep camp by a big Grizz boar and decided to cut his solo hunt trip short. I took him out Elk hunting and on the second day he came across a fresh mulie kill that had fresh bear sign everywhere. Personaly I love to hunt the country that the big bears live in and it's usually a treat when you actually see one and I cannot imagine hunting without them around.

Yes. We keep hunting, and we pass knowledge on to the next generation. That's the best way to honour them there is. That's how i honour my grandfather - most of the youngsters i teach get to shoot the shotgun he gave me that was his when he was a boy. That's how i'll honour my father when he goes. That's how i'd like to be remembered.

Someday somewhere when i'm gone some guy is going to show a kid a 'trick' - and say 'this was taught to me by a guy i knew when I was your age. Heh - i remember the time me and him... ".

That's good enough for me. :)

We hoist a few around the fire from time to time as well.

If you have something else in mind, i'd be happy to hear it.

Sounds like the bear was after him as a food source since the evidence seems to indicate that Peters was found partially covered up when they found him and that's apparently why he was difficult to find.
