Aint been on here much for some time. One of the boys from work was on here and saw a thread about the fact that I hadn't done a contest!! Last year there was evidence of cheating:mad:. Cheating at cards or cheating on the wife is one thing, cheating in a turkey contest just don't go:mad::mad: I was member number 40 when this forum was begun some years back and still have way short of 1000 posts. I say what needs saying;)
I support a local contest where birds are scored by the same individual and all is on the up and up. This year the longest spur will receive on of my "Hook Hunter" long box calls in walnut and purple heart
I had an excellent season calling in lots of birds and had 7 mature gobblers at once in front of me. One of those birds came in and drove off the first bird that was with the hens at fly down then face off 5 others (likely 2yrolds) that came in to take the hens. He drove the hens into the bush on a knoll then paced back and forth gobbling and the other five wouldn't go in fight. That bird weighed 22/14 had 10 1/2 beard and 1-3/16 & 1-1/4 spurs. I know this cuz I killed him

Bird 2 was after having called in quite a few birds and yes even missing one:eek::eek:. This was one of the best dramas in my years of calling. He was in font of me for at least thirty minutes and must have gobble 200 times. Finally he came in to my purrs and died weighing 22/11 10 1/4 beard and lovely spurs at 1 3/8 and 1 7/16

Although I used my box-calls quite a bit on some days, on both kills these calls were used most. A "purr pot" and most of all an old glass over slate call that was the first glass call I ever made some years ago. The glass was hand cut from a window.

I also chased off a few trespassers and then the was the quad. I figger the quad riders were going to have nightmares any way so I might just as well be in them. They won't be back:D
Great season I hope everyone else had the same.

Nice pics, I hope I can get one on Monday. Ill settle for anything legal, even a 3 legged midget with a beard..

Nice birds. I had one hang up at about 75 yards opening day, that's the closest I've come this year, but I've only got out twice. Probably have better luck if I could drag myself out of bed in the morning......:D

just went and got my second tag. praying to the turkey gods that i can fill it in the morning.

Well, I've been bragging a lot lately, so I figure why stop. I got my very first bird this year after two dry years and then got my second last monday!:dancingbanana: They weren't record breakers by any means, actually not much compared to the OP's. #1 was 21.5lbs, 7/8 spurs, 9 1/4 beard, #2 was a 16lb jake with nubs and a 3" beard. Not trophy birds necessarily, but waaaaayyy better than tag soup...again.

Good luck to those still out hunting! Congrats Tomf on #2.
USP! I read some of the other thread about calling. What ever call you use it is important to not over do it. The easiest call to use can also get used too much if you know what I mean.
Things are winding down and there aren't as many hens available as there was a few weeks ago. Prime time for the longer spurrs of the lonely old gobbler. That said, that same gobbler has heard know end of calls some good and some like the field next to where I hunt. I actually went down to the fence and called that hunter out of his blind and told him to leave that goofy "Jake Shake" or what ever they call that thing that sounds like a door stop spring the #### home as it was spooking birds. This ass clown spooked a lot of birds this spring. I had a bird coming in at about 70 yrds when the thing whent off and my gobbler took off at a trott. That was the morning I introduced myself.
Both my dead ones and quite a few other birds were suckered by my glass over slate pot slate. Some mornings I had to get on it and call aggressively other mornings it was necessary to purr and yelp very softly in order to set up a mystery for the gobbler to explore. Don't think a pot can't call long distance as I called in three from more than a half mile out of a deep valley (Otter) and had another join in with his hen without making a sound. Should have been shooting video that morning instead of tungsten as I made the mistake of not holding well and missed. Yes it happens.
You need be in the woods way early tomorrow morning and call softly . Wouldn't hurt to Google "tree yelps" Call a little and sit still THEY HEARD YOU. When to call aggressive and loud and when to call soft an sweet is sort of like the Kenny Rogers song The Gambler. You got to know when hold em and know when to fold em. Nobody can teach you that you learn it sitting under the trees

Yeah was out today. I guess the hard rain with all the flooding made it a waste. Got in the blind by 5am. I had a deer stand right in front of the blind eating stuff. No sign of any turkeys and no gobbles. Lots of other birds and stuff. Maybe it was just the weather.

Looking out the hut today

I hope I'm not the reason you quit doing the contest. I was accused of cheating last year. The bird I got was a 2year old bird, nothing that was going to win any contest. I weighed it in at the local shop for the draw if you enter a bird. When I got home I took pics, weighed and measured the bird and posted them on gunnutz. I didn't compare the numbers from the store to mine. Later I got some PM's that someone had complained I was cheating. The bird wasn't in the top 10, I didn't knowingly cheat to win any prize, just didn't really pay attention. Love the call I got from you the year before, best I use still. I will never again enter a turkey contest, not worth the headache.

you decoy looks like it is dented? or is it just the mesh from the blind that is messing me up.

Its abit of both, the decoy had a small "accident" :p

Heres some more pics. Was out today, it was over 40 with the humidex. To hot. Saw no Turkeys.

Its an Ameristep Bone Collector. It has lots of windows, removable mesh with velcro. It survived the huge torrential rain storm we had and didnt leak. Comes with tie down points. Carrying backpack. Has a vent in the roof. I am very happy with it so far. I had two large chairs in it, my pop up picnic table and there was still room. I can almost stand up in it. Weighs about 20 pounds fully packed up in its backpack.

Setup is maybe 2 minutes? Pull open the hubs and up it goes. Does not require any weird folding to put away. Collapse and pack.

Here is my bird from this year, he was a cagey one to call in but he finally gave in to my clucks purrs and yelps. The gobblers were light this year in my area, must have been a hard winter for them. He only weighed 17 lbs 4 oz, 9 5/8" beard, and 3/4" spurs. There was a lot of activity that morning, even a robin landed on the end of my 1300.

I already posted this in another thread but being as this seems to be the place to brag here's my PB bird from this year:

1 3/8" spurs. Not bad for my 2nd year chasing these buggers. Tagged out too with another last week. That one was 1 3/16".
