Been watching videos on YouTube on how to field dress a deer, since I'll be going for my first time. Looks disgusting. How do you guys deal with it? Yea yea I know, man up you p****y, but seriously. How bad is it really?

Butchering an animal has a few slimy moments. Don't puncture the guts and you will be fine with the smell. Be very careful when you are all slimed up not to cut yourself. It is easy to do if you let yourself get distracted. You will be fine.

Just work slow and easy with yer knife. There not as messy with a good shot that doesn't hit too far back hehehe don't puncture any gut or intestine and it won't smell so bad ;) but if you do, that would be the gross part.
I have a buddy who has a bandana and a little bottle of pure vanilla extract. He puts a couple drops on the bandana then around his nose/mouth it goes. He loves hunting and can gut an animal like a pro... He just hates the smell LOL

Yeah first time is the hardest naturally. Also, if you get a buck during the rut, don't mind that rutastic stench of deer testosterone - just don't grab him mid rear leg.

Dot hit them in the guts and gutting is not bad.
I don't mind it at all. I usialy do all the gutting in camp.
I see too many people do the fish style of gutting. And it's nasty.
Just cut in and start rippin it out.

Their are certain things you don't want to cut.

I am not going to lie. I have dressed a lot of deer and I still hate doing it. This is despite the fact that I can get field dress a deer in under 2 minutes. The smell is god damn terrible and I hate handling warm organs. I do it out of respect for the animal, the hunt and the meat but I absolutely hate this portion of hunting. It isn't enough for me to quit hunting but I find it unpleasant.

Butchering game is not gross at all... I have an OCD germ thing... I am disgusted by public washrooms, poor hygiene in restaurants, I am vigilant against servers or food preparers who contaminate their hands and then contact food, or sneeze etc.... in the bush though, I can field dress a couple deer and sit down and have a sandwich with only a cursory clean up (or no clean up)... it just isn't the same thing... people are disgusting... game is just another part of the natural environment.

I'm with you on that one Hoyt!!

I always thought it was kinda fun.

My best friend and hunting bud is like you. I call him "Doctor Doom". :) His favorite thing to do is cut open the stomach to "see" what the animal was eating. I always call him on it - as it hasn't changed in all the years we have been hunting. (yep - it is still alfalfa and other half digested greens) I am tempted to get him a cardboard box with a label on it that states it is from the CSI lab so that he can "confirm" what field the animal was eating in.

haha....thats funny because I'm exactly the same way! I have a hard time explaining to others how I can be a germaphobe but have no problems cleaning game. People discust me more then anything in this world. Having said that, unfortunately I was blessed with a fairly big nose that tends to pick up smells that others cant. When possible, I prefer dressing animals outside in the open to reduce how much smell my nose can suck in. I can only think of 2 times that a smell was excessively horrible. The first time was when I cleaned my first turkey. Not sure why there was a horrid stink, but that yellowish bile crap that comes up into the crop was unbearable. The other time was the first time I accidently shot a Merganser. I wanted to take responsibility for the harvest and figure I would utilize the meat and make cat treats. Needless to say, the bird stunk to high heaven and the cat wanted nothing to do with it. Lesson learned.

Ideally you have an experienced person demonstrate the procedure or guide you through it the first time. Otherwise some of the YouTube videos will help. A gut shot will be messy otherwise everything should come out intact. A Butt Out tool works real well for the anus and there are YouTube demo videos on its use. As for dealing with the windpipe some will just cut through the neck severing the windpipe allowing it to be pulled out. Others will reach up inside and grab the windpipe with the left hand while reaching in with the knife in the right hand and severing it. I prefer the latter that way the head is not flopping all over the place if dragging the deer afterwards. If doing the latter take care not to cut yourself. Once everything is cut away from the body rolling the animal on its side will permit the innards to pretty much roll out. After doing a couple it's no big deal.

I like field dressing. It usually gives me a chance to try out my newest, latest and greatest knife. If you worried about the smell just put a bit of vicks vaporub on your upper lip. You can also put ear plugs in your nose. These are little lessons I learned changing diapers. It's funny that I can dress a deer without batting an eye but brains gross me out. Whenever I cut the skull cap off and flick the chunk of brain out I get a bit queezy. That and pumpkins. Pumpkins are nasty inside.
