Ground Blinds-How Effective Are They?

I want to help out a handicapped friend who can't use a tree stand. We would set him up at a distance of within 20 yards of where game should appear. Wind would swirl around the area.

So, my question is, how well would the tent type ground blind contain a hunter's scent?

I believe without wind the rule of thumb is that your scent reaches a deers nostrils at 20 yards. I don't think there will be much you could do with swirling wind but ground blinds work well enough if the wind doesn't give you away. It also depends on the buck I suppose as some don't really seem to be overly bothered by the smell of us. More to do with movement I think.

They do make those activated carbon blinds though. Not sure on how much I'd trust something like that but maybe worth looking at anyways.

I'm pretty sure the Ameristep blinds are huge. Saw one at the local archery rnge and it could accommodate 2 guys easily and 3 in a pinch, with plenty of room for you to move and for gear. Eastman Outfitters make a decent sized blind as well.

Or you could always make your own using deadfall, thats my plan for this year.

Over the years I've constructed ground blinds out of bush debris, corn stalks or whatever was handy. I've had fairly reasonable success deer hunting in this manner. It's more a matter of making sure that you're comfortable. Deer are semi-accustomed to human scent. It's the twitching and moving around that usually spooks a deer. The bastards can sneak right up on you also. I've been made a fool of by more than one whitetail when I thought I was being vigilant.

I have an Ameristep "doghouse" blind.My son and I have had doe's within 10 feet of us all week.The wind was blowing bigtime yesterday and they just went on their way as normal.

I use an Ameristep "Doghouse" blind.

For $60.00, it is big and comfortable. I keep three windows open and leave the back closed (with reference to where I think the deer will be seen). This keeps my silhouette from being seen thru the blind.

I shot an 11 pointer 182 lb buck last year out of it. The deer walked by me less than 30 meters away. It was 7:15 ish in the morning with a slight wind and it didn't have a clue I was there.

I would recommend putting the blind out as early as possible so the deer get climatized to it. My trail cam is set up about 10 yards from it and this year I have hundreds of pictures of does eating just next to it.

I use my treestand for archery as I only sit in the tree for an hour or so at dusk. The ground blind is where I hunt rifle from. This year, I gotta figure how to get the lazyboy chair in it.
