Groundhog and yote gun!!

Hi all,
I need some advice and on what gun is good for both yotes and groundhogs.Is there a good gun that will take both!!Anything out there for sale?Any Comments!!

Just out of curiosity, is the .204 hard on barrels. I've never seen/held/fired on e of these and have heard (of course from all the experts:rolleyes:),that this is a problem)

And no I'm not hijacking the thread. .22-250 baby, that makes the little turds explode. I like a 68gr hollow point, I keep them cruising just fast enough that I'm not trashing my Mike Rock.

I find this also an exceptional round for the little grey dogs as well. At least they don't seem to like it:D!!!!!
 
Another vote for 204.

My barrel is showing its age after about 3500 rounds, but it is such a flat shooting rifle that it's point blank range is amazing. (I'd estimate 275 yards)

I have one that is a working anti-yote gun on our ranch. Even the 32 grainers have more than enough punch to drop a yote dead as a stick without making a big mess.

223's are fine and so are 22-250's,
 
coyote & woodchuck rifle

I'm just starting to use a 22-250AI barrel on my 700P
and I'm impressed. I get 3975 fps out of the 55 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips.
I shot a woodchuck at 275 yds on the first shot. Will use it for coyote also and having shot some of those with a 270 win, 7mm Rem mag and even a 7mmSTW. I can tell you it can't be too powerfull. Those animals are tough. I would never consider a .204 or a .223 unless I limited myself to very close shots such as 100 yds or less and even then I'm not sure. Incidentaly only the coyote I shot with the STW fell in his tracks. All the others ran off for a while. The one I got with the 7mm Rem mag ran about 100 feet with a lung hanging out of his chest. My brother in law shot one in the chest with his 308 and the critter ran off dropping some of his innards on the way. I'm not saying you can't dispatch a coyote with a 204 or a 223 but don't send a boy to do a man's job.

Guess you'd have a hard time convincing the 150+ yotes I have shot with my 220 Swift that it's not enough gun. I have killed them out past 450 yards and never lost a one. A few ran after the shot, but never far. I agree that the 223and 204 should be limited to closer shots, but at 200-250 they are still tripping along pretty good, and with frangible bullets they kill fairly decisively. My worst situation with a yote was with the 7mm mag, but it was my own fault, since I shot him too far back with a bullet that was of pretty sturdy construction. He went about ¼ mile before expiring. Really hate that scenario.

Here again I'm not debating you can dispatch a coyote with any rifle in fact I'm sure you can do it with a 22LR with a well placed shot (I know a fellow hunter who shot a bear with a 22LR and it went right thru his lungs and out the back probably missed the ribs but still, he fell dead)
My hunting experiences lead me to believe that even chest shots can lead to a running animal even if fataly wounded. I prefer "dead in his tracks" so I don't have any tracking to do. Coyotes are very tough animals.
 
I don't hunt coyotes but know someone that does. He puts 120gr BT in his 7RM and grenades them. The last pics he showed were well...FINAL.

He has also had success with 40gr Vmax in 223's. 87gr Speer in 243.

My experience shooting deer is that even with a honking big hole with no heart and lungs, if a game animal wants to get up and go, they will for an amazing distance.

CNS or 'red mist' is the only sure way to drop an animal everytime.

17HMR = gophers out to 200 yards

17HMR = coyotes out to 75 yards

223 = gophers 100 to 400 yards and further if you can hit them :D

223 = coyotes to 400 yards

22-250 = to much for close in gophers actually too much for any gopher no matter the distance

22-250 = with practice coyotes to 500 yards

I think all 22s should be judged by comparison to the 22-250 AI which is now undisputed "KING".
Refer to reloadersnest.com on the fastest rifle bullet recorded. 5100+ fps !!!
now, can anyone beat that in .22 cal???....... :cool:
 
5100 fps looks impressive; I seem to recall hearing about the 22-243 Middlestead approaching this velocity too, but speed doesn't equal accuracy furthermore, you would have to search high and low for a bullet that will consistently hold together at those speeds. I think the premium you'd pay in barrel life would make it an expensive way to shoot varmints, bet heck, I love people that shoot like that. Practical considerations aside, someone HAS to try it and that's cool by me.
