Groundhog hunting

This was posted a month ago. Got this one on March 16th. Now I'll leave them alone until fresh targets are up and running around.

I moved him onto some snow for better contrast. He was pretty big but light weight after a winter of sleep and nothing to eat!

Look at the size of thoose teeth!!!

I've been always wanted to hunt these buggers ever since but never got around to.

Anybody know of some places in Southern Ontario or even organize a CGNers "ground hog day" please count me in (actually count two in: my brother in-law is eager to hunt those buggers too):D

Another question: A friend of mine hunt them before and he claims he ate them and he marinate the meat in milk for over night and cook them and he claims it taste like pork chop???(please don't ask me and I was refer to what he said) is that true?????

There used to be lots of them not far from T.O., we hunted them for years, N.E. of Toronto, then they were gone. Coyotes wiped them out, and we had to go near Peterborough to get them, farmers would let you at them and shots could be very long if you wanted to take them often 800 yds or more. We tried the long shots, but this was before rangefinders, and the unbelieveable shooters on Gunnutz, and I don't believe we connected on any at those ranges. I hear they are making a comeback in the Port Perry area, which is where we used to shoot them, in the early 60s we could shoot 50 a day on a farm, and come back a few weeks later and it seemed like there were just as many!!!

I've eaten them when I used to shootem' up in the Osgoode area of eastern Ontario.
Consider what they eat on a regular basis as vegitarian critters, they are are pretty tasty.
We'd skin and gut the younger ones, cut the scent/oil kernels out of their arm pits, then toss them in a small hard sided cooler with a couple of cans of pineapple juice for a few hours, the BBQ them, slop on BBQ sauce near the end and yummy-licious!!

Thanks Ben and Ranger for your post!

So they are around not far from T.O. may be I will do a little scouting and ask around to see any farmer has problem with them may be I can hook up something!

So my friend didn't lie and you can eat those critter!:p

Anybody know of where to get them please chime in.

Are these critters in abundance in SW Ontario, I'm tired of getting skunked by yotes all the time :)

theres always 4-5 of them along wayne gretzky parkway between henry st and the first bridge that goes over train tracks going towards the mall. quite a few of them around outside the city limits too;)

yes you can eat them and they are very tasty. best time to eat them is in the spring to early summer before they have a chance to pack on the fat, which doesnt taste too good. im supposed to be meeting a landowner tomorrow who is having problems with hogs. if i do get permission and everything looks good ill take you out to whack a few...

If its not too much to ask can I come with you guys?:D

I am serious and I am willing to do work or pay the land owner in exchange for the permission to hunt on their land!
