I bought a 17 Remington Fireball from Prophet River (Clay is awesome to deal with) and now have 45 rounds through it. I'm in the process of load development and got this group today using 19.9gr of Benchmark powder with a 20gr V-Max at 97 yards (range finder). I cleaned the barrel with a Patchworm and Shooter's Choice when I first received the rifle and haven't touched the barrel since. I'm not one of those shoot once, clean once kind of guys. I've read on Saubier that Cooper uses 20gr of H335 for their loads so I'm assuming it would be a more accurate powder to use. The scope I used is a 4-12 Leupold VXII and I'm thinking I could shrink the group with more magnification and trigger time.

Thanks for the kind replys. I was thinking the group isn't as good as it should be, yet. I'm shooting a Cooper Model 38 Classic.
 
OOOH, you"re a bad person! I have been hankering after a .17 centrefire and I did'nt need to see that, esp when the sqeaks are starting to stand at the side of the road and taunt me!
 
What is even worse is if you check out the ballistics. I can't remember the specifics, but it goes something like a 20gr V-Max at 4000fps zeroed at 1" high at 100 yards is -.4" at 200 yards and -4.4" at 300 yards. To me that is pretty cool and tipped the scales as far as wanting to buy a 17 cal rifle. I wanted to be able to shoot something that I could spot my hits with and still be fun to shoot. I'll get my chrony out and do the specifics when I finally find the perfect load.
 
If the load data for your rifle was not included with the factory target, you can e-mail Cooper with your serial # and they will give you the load. The only thing they will not provide is the seating depth. Well that was the case in the good old days (2 years ago).
 
Apparently Cooper's load is 20gr of H335 and a 20gr V-Max with a OAL of 1.830". This is from what I saw on a post on Saubier.
 
I was toying with getting my .22 k hornet rebarrelled in 17 ak/imp hornet, but now it's starting to shoot ok so a full blown .17 centrefire is next on the shopping list!
Those are some pretty impressive groups, I think I need one of those(not sure if my wife thinks that!)

Nice shooting. I have a .17 Remington and those little calibers sure can shoot. Mine is a M700 BDL and the load is a 20gr V-Max and 24.5grs of Varget.

Now that is what I would call a nice group.;) Very nice shooting. Hopefully I can get mine near there.
 
I missed a Magpie at about 200 yards today out the window. Don't worry about me and gophers as I'm not a very good shot. Paper and a rest is one thing and shooting is another.;)
 
I look forward to trying my 17 Fireball when I get it (Rem 700 Varmint SF). Maybe you should try 25 grainers? Im gonna use Benchmark and try the new IMR 8208
 
I have 500 20gr V-Max and 3lbs Benchmark sitting in the basement so I'm hoping I can make them work. Here's a pic of the test target that came with my rifle. This is a 3 shot group at 50 yards. It makes me humble and gives me something to strive for. I like little groups.:D I've read some good things about IMR 8208 and your Remington should be no slouch either. For the limited amount that I have shot this caliber, I really like it.

Thats good shooting .I would think it will group better as you get some more rounds through the rifle.with 45 rounds the barrel is hardly broke in.it appears to be already minute of gopher:D
 
NIce group for a new gun. The only complaint I have heard about the 17 Fireball from my prairie dog hunting buddies stateside is that they can't get their reloads to shoot tighter than factory stuff! The 17 does not blow dogs up as well as 20 or 22 cal stuff due to their size. It will turn gophers pink steam no problem though. Your going to want minnimum 20 or better yet 25X optics as well.
