Group I shot today

Verticle stringing

Hey guys,

Not sure how close you are to the maximum with that load but I was told by Dan Opel (Opel Custom Bullets) that the verticle string can possibly be eliminated by a small increase in powder.

I stacked 3 of his bullets virtually on top of each other to form a .334" group. When I sent him a pic he informed me about the slight powder increase.

This might help.

Apparently Cooper's load is 20gr of H335 and a 20gr V-Max

Mine is a M700 BDL and the load is a 20gr V-Max and 24.5grs of Varget.

To put these numbers into proportion: can you imagine a .30 cal rifle firing a 100 grain bullet, using 100 or 130 grains of powder?

No wonder these .17s are such screamers... wow! (essentially, they are the .17 cal equivalent of a .30-.378 firing 100 grain bullets)

According to Hodgdon's website, 20gr V-Max and 20gr of Benchmark is good for 4013fps. There is no load data for Varget that I saw. I'll set up the Chrony probably next week and run some ammo through it to get some firm numbers. I read somewhere that Remington's factory ammo hits 4100-4200fps. Don't know if that's true or not.

Well this pisses me off. I went out with the chronograph today to test some loads in different rifles and I find this old thread of mine and I was using 19.9gr of Benchmark and I thought it was 18.9 and I loaded up about 75 rounds. I broke my RCBS kinetic bullet puller so I'll have to wait for the part to arrive. With 18.9gr and a 20gr V-Max with the chronograph placed 10' from the end of the bench I got these results.
1 - 4007
2 - 4047
3 - 4039
4 - 4087
5 - 4063
And I ended up shooting my chronograph too. At least it still works.

How was the group? I'd never pull 75 rounds unless they were grouping more than 2 inches at 100. FS

No idea as I was just shooting through the chrony and into the dirt. I'll have to try them out and see if I need to pull them all or not. If they are minute of crow at 200 yards I'll use them.

Trust me, I need a rest and a wee bit of luck on a calm day. The nice thing is it shoots so flat you just put the cross hairs where you want the bullet to go.
