Sounds like there quite a few of you out there doing this, ive never seen any body while out and about pushing with dogs or know anyone. I live and hunt in the Apsley (north kawarthas) area and grouse are plenty full but its just finding them, our usual method is jump in a truck or quad and drive till you see one. Here are some of my concerns with getting a hunting dog and may determine which breed I would get.
1. Size - we have a springer mix now roughly 50lbs and thats max for size i would like to go, I would prefer a smaller breed of dog
2. Training- what kinda of time do you have to put in and how did you guys learn what to do with the dogs?
3. Price - Can this be done on a budget? im not the kinda guy to go drop huge $$$ on a dog.
Get a French Britt but it need to come from a hunting ... the show line will hunt but need a lot and really a lot more of time and training to achieve what hunting line will do just by instinct...
Britt are so Friendly and so gentle around kid they are really great with them..they have a On/Off switch .. They understand When they are outside and inside the house.. Mine when he is in the house you won't even know he is in.. But when you put him outside that turn the switch on !!!!!
And for training .. There 2 thing you need in DVD ''Perfect Start'' and the other one ''Perfect Finish'' about eveyrhting you need is there but is about 150$ for the combo.. YOu will probably need an E-Collar Tri-Tronics are great to work with..
And you will eventually need some birds.. Find a Farm around you where they got some Pigeons and you can go form time to time to get some..
After this if you follow waht they say in the DVDs you will be good to go with a heck of a hunting dog.. I can tell you, you won't believe how those Britt are really unbelievable in all kind of cover even in water to retrieve ducks.
Good luck
P.m me if you want some more info on the breed..
