Hi all. This is my third season hunting. My first two seasons were pretty good but this year I've been loading up the freezer.
Here are a few photos.
I like hunting geese. But this year my goose trip turned into a duck trip. What a riot. We go out by a small town in eastern alberta called Consort. My Dad has been goose hunting there for decades. It's a bit of a rough trip in that we camp and go over thanksgiving weekend so the weather can be pretty tough. That said it's always fun.
I started out my trip finding and getting three grouse. Had only been there for about an hour just on a scouting trip to see what water the birds were on and stumbled across these three beauties. Pulled out my Marlin .22 and neck shot all three. Got to love grouse. I usually bow hunt them and very rarely get to take all the birds in a flock. But with a bolt action .22. Seems no problem as they just waited their turn. Anyways here they are.

Did a bit more scouting the next morning and got permission for a nice little grain field that had a bit of goose and loads of duck activity. Got up early the next day set up and had flock after flock of mallards roll in.
Got 14 birds holy crap! So much fun shooting ducks!
Here are a few shots.

This is my view from our "blind" we usually just find a aspen stand and brush in. Set up the decoys about 40 yes away and call them in. It's kinda primitive compared to some of the newer approaches but I dig the idea of using natural cover. Finding a good place to shoot from building up some cover... I like it. Here are the birds. And a beer!

The camp including FOG, Double Tap and Shadow (actual names withheld to protect the innocent)
From here I went on a solo hunt to fill my Mule Doe tag. I hunt in SE Alberta about 45 min outside of a small town called Milk River. It's private land and I've had success there for all three seasons I've been hunting. It's a great place the deer grow up nice and tasty. If I ever draw a buck tag there are some pretty good genetics showing on the land I hunt. But until then I will have fun chasing , stalking, sneaking around honing my skills on these beautiful does. The first photo is my doe. The second is the view from where I shot her. I usually bow hunt here but since I drew a tag I figured I would let my Ruger Scout .308 start to pay for its self. My bow has payed for its self over and over.

What a beautiful doe. It was just over 2km to drag her back to the road. She boned out to a healthy 80 lbs of meat. I did the butchering my self. That's the exit hole you see here. I was down hill from her when I took the shot.

What an amazing place! It's about 8:30 am in this photo.
Since then I've just been hitting the local public lands for rabbit and grouse. I got one more grouse(no photo) and a few nice little Hare. Here are the bunnies. First photo is one hare and my Marlin. Same one I used for the grouse. Second is my latest hare from last week. I think these are snow shoe but could be wrong, if any one can confirm or otherwise that would be cool.

The rope is how I tie them to my pack.
I'm not done yet. I can still hunt grouse till Jan15 which I will go out a few more times and I always have my eye out for rabbits.
A bit about me... I've been shooting for about 20 yrs, never really had the inclination to hunt till I took up archery. I live in Calgary and I make my living as an artist.
Feel free to list your questions below and your concerns on someone else's thread. Lol

Nice, wish I was that lucky... been hunting 3 years too... just for grouse and rabbit but I don't have this much luck... nice to get out there none the less.

Grouse, Ducks, Rabbits Oh Deer!

Grouse, Ducks , Rabbits and Deer OH MY !!
Thanks for sharing the events and the photos too.
The Milk River has a pretty big spread that covers alot of area and some World Class Bucks come off that spread (Ranch).
Thought about a hunt there from BC, but the $$ was to much for this eat hunter.
You mentioned 80lbs of meat...did you use the skinless method ??
Thanks Again !
Rob

I really like your camp setup...... I have a fully serviced hunt camp that is more like a cottage now.... but I have plans to buy another tract of land and get a setup like yours....... I miss it....

Very well done and great thread.....

I am compelled to say the story and photo's have the spirit of hunting written into them. I hunt all of these quarry and can relate to your enthusiasm including camp life. Time is short so I'm sure this season is one that will stick in memory. Good hunting!

Thanks for all the replies.
Jmpell go take your course! I've been a backcountry hiker for decades and thought I'd seen a lot of land and animals. It wasn't till I started hunting that I really started to see the wilderness. Hunting really changes the way a person experiences nature. I see way more now hear way more now.

Hey Rob
You are absolutely correct about the bucks around Milk River. Big beautiful healthy animals.
I just did a traditional debone. I've looked at other methods but I just don't know how Id make it work with our regs on keeping evidence of ###. Also I'm pretty interested in this whole idea of butchering. For instance I couldn't have made these little sirloin chops if I had boned it all out in the field.

What time is dinner and does your wife like Red or White?
Great looking chops !!

Thanks Rob
I'm not married. I prefer whiskey of the Rye or Scotch type.
I'm hoping to get two deer next season. I really want to try my hand at cured meats. Some salting, drying smoking maybe a corned beef type of thing.
It was hard to cut into this leg. It was just such a beautiful looking thing.
