Grouse gun recommendation-please help.

I much prefer o/u guns to sxs guns,so I will do doing all of my bird hunting with either my Citori 28gauge or the Citori 20 gauge that I am currently shopping for.

I bought a like new used one a couple of weeks ago.I was shopping for a Citori 20 gauge, but when I picked up the 28,I just had to have one.Of course the great deal that Pud at Bashaw Sports gave me,helped to seal the deal.

Clay at Prophet River has two Citori 28 gauge guns on the way for great deals as well, but for the same price,my used gun included five Briley extended chokes, and A browning luggage style case.

Not using your FAIR?
I thought it was shooting well for you?

It shoots okay for me,but I still prefer the high rib Citoris. The Citori skeet has always been my favorite shotgun, but since the new 12gauge and 20 gauge skeet guns are all ported,I decided to try other shotguns.I just recently came upon an older unported 20 gauge Citori skeet that I am dealing on.

However the main reason for getting rid of the FAIR is not because of the gun itself, but rather because of the dealer. After all of the crap that John is going through with his FAIR,I absolutely will not have anything to do with the dealer that John and I bought our FAIRs from.As such,I sold it.

Here is Oban on point on a pheasant.

I shot 9 birds today using my Chapuis 28 ga O/U and most were hit with Federal 8.5 target loads. I did loose one hen when hit at distance with Winchester 5s, my second barrel. There was a pillow full of feathers and she flew some distance and felll, but we could not find her!

3/4 Oz of 8.5s has a lot of pellets. Head shots are lucky and are instant kills. Body shots don't penetrate but will knock the bird down. The dog will get the knocked out bird and we humanly dispose of the bird once retreived. The bird when shot with target loads is hit like a solid 2X4! No pellets in the meat but out cold!

I use my Chapuis 28 on nearly all my grouse, woodcock and pheasant hunts over Oban.

Is there anything a 28 gauge cannot do!Great pictures of a great hunt with your 28 gauge.

My dad has an old savage O/U. It is chambered in .410 on top and .22 on the bottom. It is the best grouse gun I have ever heard of. Not nice looking but functional and accurate!

I never said anything about breaking the bank. In fact my whole point was to indicate how to spend $600, as he might on a new gun, and get a much better quality used gun.

You proved my point by buying your "nearly mint" Stoeger for $300, because you bought it used. All I'm saying is don't rush, look around. $600 doesn't buy very much in a new SxS. That's not my opinion, that's just the facts of what it takes to build a SxS.

And anyone's income has nothing to do with looking to get good value.

Agree 100%. Watch for deals, scour the ads, look high and low. I stumbled onto an English-style Ugartechea sidelock 12 ga. for $400 IIRC. It had been used and neglected, but a little TLC brought it back to life.

Is it because we're both from Winnipeg that we like to find good deals?

We like to find good deals here in Ontario Too. ;)

Ha Ha! It's not that other don't like good deals but Winnipegers take "buying wholesale" to a whole new level.

When I first moved to Toronto, my roommate said he was going to buy a new TV. My instant response was "Wait, I know a guy. We'll get it wholesale." My roommate was sure it was hot. LOL
