At the risk of offending the purists-I admit to shooting ''chickens'' on the roadsides-mainly with a 22.Some people use a single shot 410,or 20 guage shotgun.[I like the idea of a 20 guage-you can carry a couple of slugs in your pocket].Does anyone use a 20 guage bolt action mossberg with sights?

I've never shot either a 410 or 20 guage B/A Mossberg-what are they like?My intended use would be strictly a truck gun for chickens.I've been trying to find a 20 guage barrel for my savage 219-but that seems to be proving elusive,so am now looking at alternatives.NEF made a ''combination''but that doesn't seem to be offered anymore either

Several years ago I had the Mossberg 20ga bolt gun with a polychoke and sights on it. I managed to knock a grouse out of a tree with it and shot one or two crows on the wing. With practice, I also found it effective on clays. I fired a few slugs through it at the Hart House Range and found it effective at 20m (the length of the range), though he heavy trigger pull didn't seem to help much. I even took it with me one day for deer on a controlled hunt just north of Milton, though nothing came my way that day. It wasn't bad for the $120 that I paid for it.

I ended up selling it when I was in need of money and have since acquired a far nicer 20ga SxS that currently serves as my grouse gun. The only negative feature on it was that it sometimes had trouble feeding shells, and once managed to fire off a shotshell from an open-breach position. Interestingly enough, a few years later I read about Mossberg recalling a rifled slug gun that they built around the same action, claiming that exact same fault.

Cheers,

Frank

a typical situation is driving down a forest service road to or from where we are going to hunt-and you see a grouse at the side of the road.Another is a mid day walk down the roads to see if you can pot a grouse for supper. As I said this isn't ''purist'' grouse hunting over a dog-but the grouse tastes just as good-and also provides a good opportunity to introduce kids to hunting

Yep a great way to introduce kids to hunting "pats"/grouse. My first experience at hunting was with a single shot .22 --- many many pats & fond memories.
BUT!!!! To refer to a grouse as a "chicken" is nothing more than insulting to perhaps the greatest game animal in Canada.:p

I started with a Marlin model 410 (.410 lever)....and still carry one today.....in fact, I have 3 :)

A couple of slugs in the pocket, a few loads of #6 in the tube and I'm ready for anything that may come out on the grouse paths. Lightning fas, but still has the lever gun "romance".

IMO, the Model 410 is the ultimate grouse gun.

I've always used a Savage 24 22/410 but now have a m6 scout 22/410 which carries 1 410 slug in the butt along with 3"#6's and 22 stingers for close coyotes too. Its a great farm & truck gun (tractor also) JITC

I don't know what you call grouse back east[Partridge?] but here in the west, most of the locals call them''chickens''
A very good friend of mine, now passed on used a little double barrel .410
