I have an old bolt action 20 guage that I bought strictly for potting grouse and maybe carry a slug in my pocket in case I saw a deer.I would have bought a 410 except the 20 guage gives me the slug option.Would cutting the barrel down to 20 '' like my H&R TAMER do any harm? I know I would lose the choke, but that might actually be an improvement because I don't want to blast the grouse to bits with close range shots anyway]Anybody else do this?

i dont see why not. i switched to a short barreled 20ga for grouse recently too, although mine takes remchokes.

...but keep in mind that cylinder bore is usually quite poor for slug accuracy (most of my guns shoot foster slugs best with modified, or IC in the least).... although i suppose for a shorter range opportunity shot on a deer, its better than nothing.

just make sure you pattern it afterwards (both shot and slugs) so you know what youre dealing with.

this one has a poly choke on it-are they sweated on or screwed on?-presumably it could be reinstalled if the barrel was rethreaded

no idea, never owned a poly choke.
but any sortof gunsmithing like barrel threading, silver soldering, etc is, IMO, a waste on such an inexpensive old gun. either cut it/face the barrel/remount the bead yourself and plan on using it cylinder bore, or leave it alone. IMO.

no-an $80 shortgun is not worth spending money on, if I did anything it would be strictly ''do it yourself''and if a tube cutter could do a reasonable job I'd do it.I'm thinking most shots would be within 20 yards anyway

Contact a local gunsmith. He should be able to hone out the full to modified or better yet IC. I had one opened up to light modified for one of my boys two years ago for 50 bucks cash money.

I don't for the life of me understand this "cutting down" to 20 inch stuff with hunting shotguns. A cyl. barrel is just this side of useless beyond 30 yards and all the muzzle blast involved with such a short barrel won't make you any hunting pals.

i also have a H&R TAMer in 20ga. i am going to cut mine down to 18.5" and use it for grouse

i done this to my last 20ga and it was a real nice gun for grouse but you need to get up to 20yards from them.

I remember using a 24 inch barrel on my 12 gauge Browning auto 5 and my partner in the blind commenting abouit the extra noise from it durning firing.

I suppose it depends on what is more important and how much the gun will be used-in this case,a grouse gun will be only used occasionally-as opposed to something like skeet where you are going through a lot of shells
