Was looking at a Baikal combo in 410 & 22 and was told they can be had either in 22 LR or 22 WMR. Figure this type of gun would be an ideal all round grouse gun but unsure of what advantages or disadvantages the 22 LR vs. WMR would have?
Got lots of 22's bbut have no experience with WMR's.
Any comments?
Thanks.

i find that a 22 short is the best for grouse even better then the LR because the seem not to just sail through and do no damge.
ive shot lots of grouse with the shorts and long rifles and i would most definetly use the shorts.

If I'm not using a shotgun I use .22LR; but I have to agree with death-junky,22 short are great for grouse. As a matter of fact, when I was a kid that's what everybody up here used. Just can't seem to get the ammo as readily anymore.

IMO .22 Mag is way overkill.

This would be for shooting them on the ground, right? Why not a nice 20g SxS and you could shoot them on the wing? You could also practice atthe skeet range. It would be a better all around firearm, IMO.

this has nothing to do with short vs. long rifle, but rather the bullets construction. a .22short Hollow point will do more damage then a .22LR round nose. and vice versa.

started shooting grouse with RN bullets and found unless it hit the head or neck the grouse flew away. with a hollow poont you might loose a little more meat with a breast shot but you still get the bird.

I agree with that 110% you got to get the hollow points they will do the damage a round nose will not.

My kids will also confirm the greater effectiveness of hollow-points. One of the boys brought me a Sprucie with four holes last September. He couldn't figure out why the new bullets (PMC Scoremasters) wouldn't kill the bird.

Last week I found four Ptarmigan and had the 22 with me. Unfortunately all I had for ammo was those damn roundnoses. I shot three in the head and the fourth one through the shoulder. The first three I simply walked up to and picked up, the fourth I chased through hip deep snow and thick willows. In the end, I brough home three and a fox or owl got an easy meal. I'd have had all four if I'd had the proper bullets.

If you've got a .22 already, this gun will be of no additional value.

And for those who know me, yes, I'm biting my tongue really hard right now.
