Grouse Gun

nope-I want to know what people use-I have CZ bolt action 22lr with a 16''barrel and a bushnell 4x 22 scope.Wondering about getting a semi automatic, not sure if I will go for a regular barrel or heavy barrel, maybe a marlin 7000.

If it's a .22 for headshots I use a Remington Model 572 BDL Deluxe Fieldmaster. Very accurate gun. :D But this year I'm trying a Brno #5 and a CIL/Anschutz Model 310. Both these guns are really ####ing accurate!

If I use a shotgun I use a .410 with 7 1/2 shot on Ruffed Grouse and a 12 gauge with 6 shot for Sharptails.

The last bunch of grouse that droped dead in front of me was because of the Rem Nylon 10C I was carrying. (Nylon 10C is like the Nylon 66 with a brown stock and a 10 shot magazine)

Wow!!! First I heard of where the mere sight of the gun drops 'em dead. I'll have to get one of those and save on ammunution costs. ;)

I replied to a thread on grouse hunting on DOUBLE GUN BBS a year or so back in which I mentioned ground shooting a grouse with my 20Ga. I got s**t on from great heights about how only a #$%^& would shoot a grouse that wasn't flying. Hasn't changed my hunting practices, because sometimes in the bush here that is the only kind of shot you get, but it has made me careful about talking about it. I did point out that there are cultural differences and people shouldn't dump on people from other countries because their practices are different, but that didn't seem to cut any mustard. Some people from Canada and Northern U.S. came to my defence, but they got dumped on too.

too bad-I ''ground sluice '' grouse because I want a grouse for the pot.I am generally deer or moose hunting and see a grouse on the road-so out comes the 22.Bang-one grouse for dinner[well, mostly]I have absolutely nothing against the guys who target grouse and go after them with dogs and only shoot them on the wing-but for me, the grouse is incidental, but tastes just as good.Besides,we don;t always get a moose or deer and few grouse breasts are great camp food-part of the hunt

K98, I guess I deserved that. Good one.

While I have participated in many discussions about ground shooting the magnificent grouse, I just find that he is just too tasty and too goofy to take seriously as a sporting game bird.
Several times a year they seem to delight in flying into my house. Not the window mind you but the wall. On more than one occassion my dog has had a mid afternoon snack due to the wildlife/dwelling collision just above his pen. The rush of the bird's explosion out of the underbrush as you walk along is tempered by its landing which more resembles an awkward teenager cannonballing into the backyard swimmingpool. No, I think I will continue to snipe at these little clowns of the woods with my 22. they are just too much fun to take seriously

If I want some grouse for the pot a shotgun is sometimes the only thing that works. If it's windy outside or the grouse have been previously shot at they can be next to impossible to get with a .22. because they're so nervous and spooky. I'm just not good enough with a .22 to hit them very often in the head when they're running.

LOL. I can easily relate to what you're saying. ;)

I would use a 20 gauge or a 410 with birdshot, but if would rather not have to chew on little balls of metal, then i would go with the cz varmint, just recently bought one and i love it to peices!!

And some guys figure unless you are doing it with a dry fly and a taper tip line , you are not reallyy fishing!
Screw 'em, what some do is not what others do.
What irks me are thoise that fugire their's is the "only way" .
I don't try to impress my stuff on other people for the most part, unless they are tryinmg to get around a rule with slyness and loopholes.
My father figured the only way to hunt birds was over a dog with a shotgun, but he also had the attitude that he did it for pleasure, he really din't care when my brother and i shot them on the trapline with .22's .
He also had squib loads for his CF rifles for when he was big game hunting and wanted some diversion !:D
My main gear these days for birds is a BP shotgun, but I also whack 'em with an unlimited class Anschutz silhouette rifle!:D

When I was a foolish young lad on the farm I was carrying around my .12 gauge loaded with Winchester AA Trap in 8 shot and spotted a Ruffy about 10-15 feet away. Anyway I nailed it cold turkey and stone dead and then I thought "OMG it took the full force of the pattern from a few feet away. I must have ruined all the meat. Was that ever stupid of me!" But I was astonished to find that the shot hadn't even penetrated past the feathers and skin and none of the meat was ruined at all.

This year it will be my fav' Mossberg 46M(b)...sporting a Bushnell 3x9x(I forget), on it's new Havlin scope mount.:D I also have a Tasco Red dot for her.
