grouse hunting gun?

12 ga modified choke. Any pump will do. #5 upland load in 2 3/4"from winchester or federal. Aim a bit high and only a few pellets hit. You can still try for wing shots if needed with the 12ga.

Aim over them, if you know the pattern of the shot within a given distance it minimizes the chance of having the bird catch an oz of shot plus the wad mid breast and turning into a puff of feathers and red mist... I've never had it happen to me... Then again if I think they are too close I just kick the ground and wing shoot em when they take off.
 
I do pretty good knocking them in the head with the sxs .410. It's fun to shoot and didn't take long to get real good with it. An old cooey 60 in my hands and I am also death on ruffies. I have had success with the 20 gauge of my F.I.L.but I don't own one so the .22 or .410 is what I use.
 
An accurate airgun won't interrupt your hunt. I've killed hundreds with head shots within 20 yards since I was six with a Crosman pump. About 600 FPS does the job one shot never had a 'stunned' bird.

Us too... killed hundreds with Benjamin HB20 pistols and Sheridan C9 .20 cal rifles... all head shots... pistols are slam dunk to 20 yards... rifles to 40 yards... we are intimately familiar with the trajectory of our guns and have made some embarassingly long shots when pressed... a 14.3 grain pellet at 700 fps is far more effective than most would imagine.

What are .410 and .20 gauges? :)

I have tended to use .22 to avoid having to wonder if my shot placement was good enough to ensure no surprises when biting down.... Probably OCD/paranoid. I will try my shotguns this season to purge these thoughts.
 
I'll be using my new Savage .22, and I figure for a nice little bush gun, my M4 Super-90 with a turkey choke.

Stop laughing. The Benelli will work fine.
