Grouse hunting guns

If I ever did that Maggie, my Gordon, would stare at me with that WTF look!

I shot many out of tree branches my labs had flushed. The dog would be staring up at the bird and the bird staring back at the dog and I swear you could walk up and pluck them out of the tree by hand they were so intent on watching the dog. My dogs never gave a wtf look? They always smiled because they knew that bird would be tumbling out of the tree any second and they would get to pick it up. They had more a look of impatience like what are you waiting for?! Blast it!! I prefer labs, they don’t question your methods!! ;)

Yup, not point letting the last one out there get away by letting it fly first! That would be like sport or something.

When I head out for ruffles it is usually with a vintage SxS- the brand and gauge can be anything from a 410 Stevens311 to a Greener F16 and anything in between , loaded with black powder and homemade shot .
it all depends on my mood at the time , and there are days I switch up guns halfway through the afternoon "just because"!:p
This year however I often used a modern made hammer SxS in 20 gauge

I'll shoot them on the ground if I get a chance or shoot them in the air if I get a chance. Ruffed grouse are my absolute favorite meal, so the thought of seeing a grouse and letting it hit the air before shooting has never crossed my mind. They're hard enough to get a shot at around here so I'm not chancing letting them go when I get lucky enough to actually see one.

Same here, if they are on the ground I shoot them, when they flush I always attempt to shoot them as the wiz through the trees at 90mph.

I hunt over a Brittany and a Setter. Usually carry a fancy German 20g SxS and wing shoot them but smile and wave to those who ground sleuth them with a .410. It's all good.

I have a few upland guns. One of my favourite though, is my Browning BSS 20 gauge Sporter, 26" barrels, mod/imp chokes. My parker and Lefever hold their own as well.

I usually use a sxs browning 20 gauge and a cocker spaniel,
if I don't have my dog with me I use a savage model 24 / 22 over 410
for ruffed grouse
for pheasant I use my sweet 16
this fall I hunted a lot of sharp tailed grouse and huns with my chessie
and I used a browning gold 12 gauge with IC choke tubes

28 Gauge all the way in a side by side. 35 years of hunting and I have not found anything better. It would be a 20 gauge if I didn't reload. Actually, come to think of it, it was the double 28 that started me loading! I have a single shot around here somewhere in 28 as well.

Late season evening road grouse or roosted grouse, 17 HMR at base of neck. Just my humble opinions of course.
