My little boy wants me to take him grouse hunting, I my self do not own any long guns so I am wondering what people on CGN use. When I was young I used a 22. but that was many years ago. A side note he will not be shooting the gun just me for now. There is a lot of selection to chose from on here just not sure what to pick up.

Thanks

Over the long haul, a 20 gauge with light target loads will serve you and your son better than a 28 gauge... I love the 28, but ammo is expensive and he may want to try ducks later, a 20 gauge single is a gun that you will just keep around... Remember, SAFETY first! Teach your son safe gun handling right from the start.

I grew up using a single shot 20ga and i find for the weight and size while walking around i still prefer it.

If you still want to have a .22 available, you could try to find an older savage model 24 in 22/20ga, or the new model 42 in 22/410.

Why wouldn't you let him shoot? That's kinda the point :).

Thanks for the info so far, Age and maturity are the main reason I will be doing the shooting this year, but next year it may be a different story.

I started my son hunting at four years old with a Benjamin .20 caliber pneumatic pistol, with a red dot scope mounted... he graduated to a Sheridan C9 .20 caliber pneumatic rifle at age six, and then to a .22 LR and .410 at age nine... he got his apprentice licence at age 12, and shot his first two toms and a six point buck that year... concurrently he started using archery gear at 8 years old and has gone through four bows since then... he loves the outdoors and is passionate about shooting sports... started his own custom duck call company, is now on the pro-staff of three outdoor companies and works in an outdoor retail sales business, mostly with firearms and archery gear... it all started when he was four and made a 20 yard neck shot on a nice spruce grouse...
