Grouse know when I'm armed?

I haven’t even seen that many ruffies thus far.
 
I clocked around 5km this weekend, never saw one Grouse (WMU 57) near Bancroft. I pack up, take my gear off and proceed take a pee behind the cabin, grouse flys out from under a big rock! Unfortunately I had the wrong gun in my hand! True story! Definitely left me with an incentive to get back up there though, this was my first time out after grouse and I like the take a few paces and stop method but I will take somebody else next time.
 
Hunting isn’t just skill, but sometimes dumb luck as well.

My buddy and I would see grouse when we had rifles and were looking for deer and shotguns full of bird shot when we saw deer.

But ..... grouse are kind of dumb .... we spook them hunting deer in the morning, make note of the area, came back with shotguns, and come back to the same area midday and shoot them. I’ve never shot grouse with a rifle even though it’s legal to do so.

We were driving back from an unsuccessful morning deer hunt once .... coming back through some long grass on both sides of the road and something walked out all bent over and funny looking. My buddy said, “what is that?” and I said, “I don’t know, but it looks like lunch” and got out and loaded a shotgun ... I could see it was a grouse by then and we cooked it for lunch lol.
 
I'd guess you are walking too fast, slow down and then move slower again, stop occasionally and look for a bit. I imagine foraging for mushrooms involves moving slower, looking closer and stopping to pick, try and do that while looking for birds instead though.

It does seem like the animals just know though. Be they birds or big game, I have certainly felt like they knew when I was hunting them or not.

Guy I know who had a lot of rifle experience that had been financed by the Government of Canada took on an inlaw when he was visiting them in Northern Ontario. Under rules of the contest, guy had a .22 and the inlaw had a 12G shotgun. Rifle guy bagged more of the local tamer grouse (5, the legal limit) than the shotgun guy did (2), I assume he was shooting them outside of shotgun ranges. Good way to impress the family I guess.
 
Yeah, normal. We stayed in a cabin around La Tuque in QC, I went on a hunt, and bagged 3 grouse in like a half day of walking (probably good 20 kms or so).
Meanwhile my wife and kids saw 6 or so within 10 meters of our cabin, probably not more than an hour after I left on my hunt.
