Grouse load for .308Win

That is so interesting, never thought of something like that!! How accurate are those reduced loads? Thanks

At the range you would be shooting a grouse, they are plenty accurate. The trick is to figure out where to hold the reticle of your scope. Often you can use where the reticle transitions from thick to thin as an aiming point.

Will it be any grouse left after being hit with a 125 grains .308 bullet ?
Use the right gun for the job. Carry a Keltec or a survival rifle in your back pack be in .410 or .22.

How about an antique handgun. Legal for small game in Ont. It maybe hard to affort one that is accurate enough ?
Just another option.

I used to clip the head with 180grn 300 WinMag out to 25 yrds.
If the bullet didnt smash its brains the muzzle blast stunned it till I could grab it.
Of course these shots always down towards the ground and a safe backstop.
Deer didnt seem to mind, but the chickens did.
Yum, Delicious.

Yes and you can hunt turkey with a rimfire rifle in BC too.

You can even hunt moose with a .17 Hornet. But nobody does. :)

As far as the Hammond Game Getter, anyone know where I can get one? Can't seem to find them available anywhere... I'll have to source out some Trailboss as well, because why not?

Brian Hammond advertises in most of the Provincial Game Regs books, and usually has a table at any gun shows he can get to.

website is gamegetter.ca both his email and mailing addresses are there.

I have used and will continue to use one in 308. I use the Yellow loads, which Brian says are too powerful, but I have them, so am getting through them slowly...
A dozen or so sized balls and a dozen power loads, don't take up much room in a pocket.

I used a reversed drill bit in the chuck of a drill press, to push a pile of 00 buck through the swage. Leaves one side round, the other flat.

Yeah, they can be a bit fiddly, but nowhere near the hassle of trying to pack a second gun around. I found the accuracy to be OK, in my rifle.

I've known Brian for a bit over 25 years, well before I knew what he did with the GameGetters.

I use Brian's Game Getters in my .303 British, .303 Savage, .300 Savage and .30-30 Winchester. All give very good accuracy for taking grouse and other small game. They do not shoot to where you have your hunting loads zeroed but the difference is not much and easy to compensate for. I use the green power rated loads and lube the balls with Lee liquid Alox. I carry one load completely assembled with spare balls and power loads in another pocket. I have nothing but good things to say about Hammond's Game Getters. Also you will not get a finer gentleman to deal with.

Many ruffed grouse have been taken with this trick. When you see the bird on the ground, just shoot you 308 under the bird 10- 15 cm in front, Earth, small rock an dirt will kill the bird

Well, I managed to get out to the range today, and I DIDN'T DIE! My test loads turned out great! 3 grains of Bullseye under a 71 grain, .312 plated bullet, drilled out flash hole, large rifle magnum primer. Hit 2" low at 15 yards. 5 shots, 1 ragged hole. Maybe a hair louder than I'd like, but I'm pretty happy about it.

I was thinking about the ruffed grouses i took with my Scout Steyr 308 and this trick maybe 6 or 7, work fine almost 100% of the time, i dont recall missing one, except were i would just pass the shot because i was closing on a buck

Another vote for the Hammond GameGetter. No problem with accuracy out to 40-50yards.
I also use it to pre-sight at 25 yards with an eyeballed bore sighted rifle, then move to 100 yards with the real ammo, saves on ammunition, shoulder and time.
Game getter POI at 25 yards 1.5-2” low, and depending upon what caliber and barrel length, full blown ammo is generally 1” high at 100yrds (give or take a little)
