I'm pumped to be out hammering some birds again, going to get a 20ga this year instead of the 12. Heading to Gogama for a week of fishing and grouse hunting!

Anyone a else heading out next week?

I'm taking my daughter out this weekend, I got the camper loaded on the truck , supplies are ready and we will be heading out after work on friday night. I'll have to make sure that she gets the first grouse of this trip.

I was out for just the first time yesterday, as here in this part of Alberta the season opens 1 Sept. Problem is, it's much too warm lately.
Even went for a 3 hour walk, split up with a brief lunch break, and did not see a single hare or a single ruffie.
Just lots of squirrels and ravens.
Of course I did not stay for dusk............so perhaps my timing was just very poor. Still, the hares might of been around then, but I should have disturbed some grouse.

Very excited to try bow hunting for Grouse this year, purchased some trauma tips and i have been practicing for months. If thats not successful i can always use the new 10/22 i purchased at the gun show a few weeks ago. Yes, this is my favourite time of the year!

True, but it's worth it. It get's a little boring going to the same old field or pond every year down here. Plus it gives a bunch of friends a good excuse to get well out of cell phone service area for a few days and away from the grind.

Looking forward to a good week here, I hope yours is too.

Nice, the bushes will be thick with people this year... LOL:p

We won't be that far away, our camp will just be a bit NE of that area. (if our preferred spot isn't taken...)

It's good habitat for grouse in the scrub brush throughout the areas that were logged out decades ago, but the bush is still really thick this time of year around there, so motion is about all you can see until you zero in on them.

One of the guys in our group brought his dog last year and that helped a lot. All considered, I think you'll like the area.

Right in my neck of the woods, except ill be trying my luck for a calf moose with the bow to start the hunt off this year. You both should be in for some decent hunting, the weather just started feeling like fall today, get out early and hunt as late as you can.

Some opening day success this morning. Beautiful day for a walk in the bush.

Only saw one and got it so not great but better than nothing!

I was wondering if anybody else found the birds scarce today...I hunted on foot all day...humping trails from 8:00 till 7:00. I was near Nairn Centre. I saw exactly 3 birds in that time. One flushed 30 yards behind and inside the tree line. I discovered that the combination of a coachgun with IC and modified chokes will pattern all around a walking grouse at about 30 yards yet leave a hole big enough for the bird to walk through unscathed (the second). My nephew hurried over and gave the third bird what for when I pointed it out to him. So, 1 bird for the day for me as well.

I've shot hundreds of birds with bows, pelletguns, slingshots and even blow-guns over the years... bows can get expensive in lost and broken arrows.

Wow, I have to see video of you taking one on the wing! :sniper:

We have taken a few on the wing, but not an easy thing to do... here is a dandy pheasant that my son shot on the wing a couple years ago... you can see the arrow hanging from its back... he was using a judo point and punctured its heart.

OP... I will be in the same area as you... but we go in by water, so its not likely we'll cross paths... good luck.
