Hi all: It is almost time to be back in the woods for Chicken/Grouse/Ruffies/Partridge. Most exciting time of the year for me. I have a few more weeks before I can go.
What are some of the essentials that you bring along, besides your gun. Ok mention your gun as well, love to hear what you carry.
Good luck!

In my vest is a pair of nitrile gloves for cleaning Hares, a good Spiderco knife, a lighter, a good cigar, paper towels, trail marker, compass, shotshells and a couple of plastic bags. I hunt within 10kms of the truck in a familiar area and keep water & a snack in it. Can't wait for October 1st, booked the week off as is tradition with me, looks to be a good season.

I'm looking for a nice vest now. Sounds good M. T. I will be carrying my Baikal IZH43 this year. ( only SxS I have) so I will be working on arm strength conditioning. JK, it will be so great that first day. Stop truck, load up, load gun & begin. My first hunt was grouse and I still get excited for opening day. Cheers

Haahaa I love hunting grouse makes me thinking back to when I was a kid
The nice thing about grouse is you don't need equipment just a 22 or shotgun and a bag to put the breast meat into and a small knife

Have a pack with enough stuff to overnight and a radio telephone. Hunt dense swampy country and take a GPS mark each time for the ATV each time I hit the bush. Use a spanish 16 ga sxs with 7 1/2's. Put up a bunch of about eight the other day, that was a good sign for this season. The numbers have been good for a few seasons now and I keep waiting for the crash.

Browning BSS Sporter's in 12 and 20 gauge... an upland vest with pocket shell holders... shoulder bag with boresnake and small can of Rem Oil, back in the truck is a flat of high brass #7 1/2 (5 boxes 12 and 5 boxes 20)... and a Springer Spaniel named Lexie.

Was going to take the bow out next weekend, for "bow season" (I think we need more than a week, but w/e), but the weather looks like it's going to be rather uncooperative. I'll be taking the Chiappa M6 (20g over .22LR), or Savage mkII out the following week. Backpack with water, some granola bars, knife, ziplock bags, pouch of tobacco and the pipe, and maybe a few other little things.

A flat, that's a lot of grouse! By the way can I have your BSS 20ga?

Can't wait to try out my 14" barrel on the wingmaster this year. Was hunting in heavy bush last year, and the 28" was very difficult to handle. Should be a world of difference.

You can never have too much ammo. Ok unless the Mrs ever decides to look in my ammo cabinet

I keep equipment to a bare minimum for grouse, so I can cover more miles. Shotgun ( SxS ), shells, a couple of water bottles, a small knife and some cheesecloth. I clean them in the bush, wrap in cheesecloth. I keep a cooler in the vehicle, and put them on ice asap. For shells, I usually start out with a full box, and when I'm halfway through that I top up.

Our week long trips is 80-120 birds... not much of the flat is left on the return trip...

And, I think I'll keep my BSS Sporter's.

I travel pretty light; my bird walks vary in length from spot to spot but I'll hit several in a day and probably end up walking a few miles. Essentials to carry or wear: My .410 pump, at least half a dozen shells in my pocket (replenished from the box in my Jeep for the next walk as necessary), folding knife, compass, eye protection, and bird vest with a nice big game pouch on the back, smokes and zippo (for the longer walks), hunting license, and when I remember, some TP just in case. In the Jeep essentials: more ammo, cooler with ice packs containing lunch and drinking water and room for some birds. I usually just put my birds into a plastic shopping bag whole and put them on ice when I get back to the Jeep, then skin and gut them after I get home.

Not that much longer now, carry - gun, 14 shells, drinking water for self and for the dogs, how much depends on proximity to some source of surface water, GPS, plastic bag, orange cap, dog collars (GPS/beeper) license, TP, vest with game bag, 2 large zip ties, radio if anyone else is along.

In truck - extra socks and extra boots dry clothes, first aid kit and more water.

I keep more in the truck, but on my person walking in I carry my rifle, 50 rounds, a buck knife, a lighter, my wallet and a vest with big pouch. And comfortable boots.

Brno sxs in 16 gauge and a box of #6 Federals. Schrade stockman-style pocket knife, compass, and map book. An old Saft-bak vest with game bag, over which goes a light orange vest. And after one too many branches in the face over the years, I never, ever walk into the bush without sporting a pair of sunglasses.
