Grouse Opener

grouse season opens here in a few days... but I usually wait a few weeks before going on a serious grouse walk. fewer leaves on the trees and a bit of frost on the ground get me in the proper mood. I wear my LL Bean bird vest that my dad gave me, carry one of my 28 gauge shotguns and maybe a dozen shells. Also a bottle of water and a snack if I remember... and usually a pair of binoculars

^Bingo! Change that to a 20 & you have me friend! ;)

Grouse season is my favourite time of year.

It is getting harder to find spots in my area, the urban sprawl is totally killing it.

I'm happy for those of you that still have nice areas to hunt!

The grouse season opening is always a nice time of year.

Here's hoping everyone enjoys it and maybe adds some game bird to their Thanksgiving feast.

Takedown 10/22, nitrile gloves, plastic bags, knives, etc, etc, a nice stroll down the lease/logging roads.

Just under a couple of weeks for the opener here. Getting excited already. I usually carry a 12, but will carry a 20 with my daughter. When out we have shells, compass, binoculars, my knife, water (and a can of pop for her as well), some snacks and of course, butt wipe. If it is a day long outing, we may even have a lunch fire, so will have all the fixings for that as well. Looking forward to getting out.

A good heavy duty sharp pair of scissors, a few large baggies, a small cooler and my Ranger single shot 20 or my Cooey single shot 16.

If I'm just going out back then I'll just throw my little badger .22lr in my backpack.

The 17th can't come soon enough!

Opens in a week or so here. Always carry my BSS 20 guage with 7.5s. Upland vest, Crkt folder on my belt, TP, bottle of water, compass, gps, matches and a snack or two.

Haven't gotten my grouse gun yet (wanting a double gun in 16 or 20ga) so it'll be my 12ga asena semi i bought from Corwin a few weeks ago. Shotgun, a box of shells, a few slugs just in case, (deer opens the same day around here) and my fanny pack. Has all the essentials ready to go, whistle, knife, fire starter, flint, lighter, game bag, garbage bag, emergency blanket, some TP, room for some snacks (i think there is a fruit source bar on there right now....) and two water bottles. I'll be adding a sawyer mini water filter soon.

I use a single shot .410, and 3" #4 Federal shells. Shotgun probably weighs 3-4lbs., good to carry all day. My kids usually come with me, so I bring my backpack and some snacks, water. I usually wear a vest so I have a place to put my shells and dead birds.

Sum of you guys get pretty serious about grouse hunting haha
me I just pack a 22 or shotgun with cheap ammo a small knife and a used plastic bag from the grocery store
it so much fun especially wen The leaves start to fall on the ground a bit harder to spot but still so worth the effort

I'm hopin to start ground this year. I was planning on my scoped 795, but if I were to use my mossberg 500 would you guys use the 28 or 18.5 barrel?

Opening day in one specific area in Quebec yesterday. It was a scorcher (29 degrees) !!! not many birds in the logging roads or trails. Birds were in the deep heavy bush and swampy areas. Strangely enough all birds were singles and young. No pairs or more at all. I packed my Franchi 48 AL 12G with 8 and 9 shot shells, lots of blazing orange as there were many hunters (opening day), whistle, bug spray, comfy waterproof boots, water repelling upland pants, water bottle, snack, knife, smokes and lighter, GPS and a "head full of hope". Found 11 birds but only bagged 2 but I did bag 4 snowshoes. Very few shots heard from other hunters. Birds were extremely nervous and spooked. I rarely not bag my limit (5 birds) when I hunt this area. I'll try again on Thursday and Friday to see if there is a change in my luck or their behavior. Birds were there all summer long during my scouting. Do they know when the season opens LOL? I love "cancelling" flights.....

Just purchased a winchester model 101 real.beauty. I hunt in area 47 ontario have not seen much grouse there the last few years. Favourite time to go is thanksgiving weekend not many leaves around that time.

I read.the rabbits are suppose to be up in numbers.this year that would be good.

OK, now I am seriously pumped, just excited before. Just returned from Harley's run and he pointed three times while jogging ahead of the ATV. He busted the second set before I was in place but held on the others. Tomorrow morning is opening day for us. Bush is soaked, bugs are not a big deal right now but that can change quickly around here. If it is not too wet tomorrow I will bring the camera.

My usual kit includes a SXS, a shot shell belt carrying way more shells than I will ever need in one day, in a mix of shot sizes but mostly 7 1/2, my trusty Filson Uplands hunting coat (or a Barbour in rainy weather) both with game pockets (containing a couple of plastic shopping bags being reused to prevent bleed throughs), a pair of fingerless gloves, Randall Model 5 knife, Buck gamebird folder with gut hook for cleaning and cooling the birds ASAP, advanced Suunto compass, survival items like a lighter and matches, a power bar or two, special wool upland hunting, nylon fronted trousers stuffed with my usual EDC pants pocket contents which include a lot more survival items, and sometimes a handheld GPS unit which makes me lazy about navigation and more than a little unobservant as well.

EDIT: Forgot my blaze orange vest, which is so legally required in ON that I could probably be fined just for leaving it off the above list. Oh, and a ball cap or fur felt fedora, depending on the weather. Need to keep sun out of my eyes, and also brain needs to stay warm.
