A couple of questions for you grouse hunters.

How many kilometers do you walk/hunt on average day of grouse hunting?

Do you attempt a second flush?
a) always
b) never
c) only when the birds are scarce and I'm about to get shutout!

Does anybody have success on real windy days or believe it is better to stay home?

Hi,
I think I make about 4 kilometers a day. But I often made 10 to 15 km on a full day (6 am to 5 pm). I don't have quad or pickup, so it is my only way to find good place. But hunting fo me is a good reason just to walk in wood:dancingbanana:

I walk about 3 to 5 miles a day. I will go again in the afternoon as long as the dogs are holding out OK. I don't follow up for a second flush. I find that if you circle back to the area a few hours later the bird will be around there again. Windy days are poorer for hunting but it is still better than work!

cheers Darryl

I'm slowing down. We used to do about 10 miles. Sunday morning I only did about 5. Always keep after a flush, always always always. I've never noticed the wind as a factor.

My father, who had a very successful Grouse Hunting career, engrained in
me that windy days were usually less productive. He wasn't much of a walker and I guess he found them a tad too flighty on those days.

Being a typical son, I've never really listened to that advice!:D

However, I might add that I locate many of my birds by hearing(not seeing) and knowing the cadence of their strut on leaves (never hunted with a dog) ..... which for the most part is negated on a windy day.

Leaves blowing and swirling about can be a visual distraction as well.
