Hey everyone! Might go for a walk and try to grab some grouse in the next few days. I was wondering...any tips for late season grouse? There's about a feet of snow on the ground (was 1", but just got a snow storm last night). I was thinking they'll mostly be perched up in a tree. Would that be accurate?

Thanks!

David

Dunno about the Quebec grouse, but around here it's the low dense cover with some bare ground under it, and the areas that had some sort of seed or berry bearing trees or bushes.
Around here that is hawthorn trees and saskatoons, where they are scrounging for the remnants of the berries that dropped.

I have a ruffie here that has been providing a great deal of entertainment, and no small frustration for my whippet, as it has been working the same patch of ground for a couple weeks now.

With snow, i go for the burried ones, you can see the form of the hole usually under a tree, they dive from a height fo burried deep. So cool, time to take of the safety off.

Go out late in the afternoon, last hour or so of daylight and look up in the trees. Once you have a foot or more of snow on the ground they will get up high in the trees in the last bit of sunlight on a cold day to feed on birch buds!! I've shot lots of limits that way.

Good advice here looking for conifers with lots of cover where snow will not be as deep. If you are hunting along a roadside I have noticed they will be along the road after the gravel/sand truck has come by so they can get their grit.

Thanks everyone...trying to get the basement done so I can try to get one last sortie before hanging up the shotty.

Tips will be put to good use! Cheers

Had a blast this week-end! Went for a walk in the woods. Flushed a grouse early in the day, tried hitting it 3 times (with both barrels of my Stevens 555) and alas, I couldn't connect.

Still loads of fun.

Even though the Stevens 555 is a lighter gun, I was a bit tired of carrying it all day. I was wondering if the 20 ga version might of been more pleasant to carry around (it's 0.5+lbs lighter I believe).
