Grouse --- what kind of 12gauge do you use?

I agree, Dad and I went out this morning, he used his 12 ga fixed full choke and I used a .22, I also had a 12 ga 870 with a 20" barrel and cylinder bore that i would have used but I felt like the .22 today. Unfortunately we didnt see a dang thing!:(
 
I've been using my 12.5" Grizzly for last couple of years. Works perfectly fine and is a very handy size when the brush is thick. I'm sure the grouse will taste just fine, no matter what you use.

I was considering a slingshot for next year. Nice and quiet.
 
I patterned my 870 with 18inch cylinder bore at 10-25 yards with #4 shot and it was a pretty big pattern. If I were to be bush whacking I would pick that one however for road walking the longer barrel won't get in the way.

I took my 18inch barrel rabbit hunting once, was the first time I was ever on snow shoes. If I had that longer barrel I would of probably fallen over more trying to maneuver that thing around.
 
Ya the grizz is pretty loud.

Those grizzly's look interesting.
Where do I get one and how much are they?

In a 12 ga. they are only 1/2 lb heavier & would be sweet as well.....

Question, why the flagging tape? Is this instead of an orange hat?
 
I really like the Savage .22mag over 20g combo. Can use the .22 for longer headhots and the shotgun for shooting on the wing. Also forces me to keep up my practice with the open sights. Happens to be my favorite gun for rabbit hunting for the same reasons.
 
On Monday I shot a grouse on the run and about to fly with my 12g with an imp mod choke. I usually use a full choke on chickens but this gun didn't have one and it was the only 12g I had on me at the time. I actually used to prefer my turkey choke on the Remington 870 Super Mag. Even with the imp mod choke I didn't hit the breasts at all. Complete head shot.

To the people who say that it is overkill; it can be. If you aren't surgical with your 12g you should probably take out something smaller or a .22.
 
hmmm... 30.06 to the noggin works well. As does a pellet gun. Id say as long as you are bringing the birds down without meat damage there is no way to hunt wrong.
 
I use a 28" 12ga Rem 870. Normally I use shot #8 federal game loads with improved cylinder choke. I use this for ptarmigan too.

Sometime in the next couple of years I plan to pick up a 28" browning citori and I'd use mod/imp cyl for the chokes.
