Grouse

Slightly west of down east here, got an easy shot on a grouse and darned if it wasn't a Spruce Grouse, the first of its kind I've seen in the area. This bird would very likely would have created a sensation in the local birding world, that is if I'd noticed the species and not shot it. Oh well, they taste the same as ruffies and now it's too late for it to be anything but lead seasoned dinner.
If you think that a spruce grouse tastes the same a ruff , you either have no tongue or you hadnt eaten a spruce

Took this little buddy out the other day for his first hunt. Score was ....... Birds-2 Hunter-0

Nice choco lab there SuperCub. How old? Crossed with a Chessie perhaps?

Tylerjwitty; If you shoot Spruce Grouse early in the season, before the bulk of their diet switchs to Jack or Spruce Pine, you'll find their isn't much difference in taste. After the snow flies and they switch to exclusively pine needles that's when their meat taste much stronger.

Where abouts in Northern Saskatchewan are you hunting Ranger G? I just moved to PA and am trying to find some trails to walk for grouse.

8 days hunting just south of Prince George and there wasn`t a day that we didn`t see less than 20 grouse, almost all were ruffed. Not may were singles, mostly pairs but we did see up to 6 together. Most I counted in a day was 46.I actually had a pair of ruffed walk into camp, got one of them.Came back from camp the next day for lunch and there were 2 more under my truck.
Also saw a ruffed male in full display with a female spruce.
