During the last two days while outside shooting gophers, I have had two canines cross my paths. Yesterday, I had a coyote trot by at a bit past 220m and today a fox at just under 350m. Unfortuantely, I only had a 22lr both days as my two new varmint rigs are sitting in the safe, ready to be sighted in (mission for this weekend). I KNOW this is Jebus just trying to mess with me... :D

See, I wouldnt have had this problem last year when I was using a 22mag for gopher duty - could have tried to sneak a bit closer and take a decent shot (which was the reason I used a 22mag for gophers last year... just in case...).

Oh well, once my 223 is sighted in, I won't have these "learning experiences"... for better or for worse.

I thought about it but I was at my main shooting location (around a horse barn) and both canines were out in the open. I know I'm just a skinny white boy but I don't think I could stalk to within range of the lowly 22LR (at least to make an ethical shot).

I feel for you Gorky!
Plinking away with the old cooey .22lr when 150yds away a fox came trotting past.. Heheheheh So I aimed high and added a few inches for direction of travel, watched the round flop into the ground behind him. FU*K!! At this he ran a twenty feet up a hill, stopped and looked at me! Well I just happened to have my trusty old Lee Enfield .303 Brit within reach... You know, the "as issued" ones with battlesight. That'll have to do.
So I quickly leaned against a tree and gave him the good news with a 150gr handload- mud, noise, dust, crap flying everywhere and an airborne fox end-over-end down the hill! Yeeaaasssss!! Got him!... So I thought.
Quickly chamber a round, sprinting toward the site like a man posessed and slow to a walk, "Hmmm, that big pill should have turned him inside out?"
Well I gave him a poke with the sharp end of the loaded Brit and you should see this boy jump up- kick in the afterburners and launch himself out of dodge!
(Must have struck ground in front on him, an "uplifting" experience?!! Hee hee!)

Still kicking myself over that one, and for not bringing out the .243 varmint rig.
Ahh well, next time...
And it goes to show- we can all hit paper at 200yds but try under pressure sometime, its quite humbling...

Cheers!

Ah...this is why the .22-250 is with me always when not walking a lot and seeking out groundhogs on the fields of Southern Ontario...because there's a lot of 'yotes around too...and I don't want to miss them.
