I was there with another fellow. Room was totally packed, which suprised me. Had to laugh to myself when half the room got up when they offered oral exams for those not comfortable with doing a written one. Could have used something other than pizza for lunch, but what the hell, it was free.

The over regulation required to hunt here is out to lunch. Today I learned that some hens have beards. I knew everthing else already. There should be challange provisions. Could have saved myself from a day glued to a hard chair.

In taking this certificate I've put the cart before the horse so to speak and still need the basic hunter/small game course under my belt before the season opens. Anyone know where I can get on one in the GTA?

Okay I remember you?? Lol ... as far as getting your basic hunter safety course , depends on your area.

I see it has not changed since I took mine!
What a waste of time and $$$$$$. Only good part was the game care and cooking info.
Had to laugh though. When I took mine the sponsor had to be Quaker Boy Game Calls. Don't have a problem with them or having a sponsor but...... Each and every time the instructor mentioned the use of a call he would pick one up, hold it carefully between his finger tips, place it right beside his head and using a louder voice says "QUAKER BOY GAME CALL" Sounded like a game show host peddling his wares.

Shortly after that I get a call from OFAH asking me about the course and trying to sell me a membersip.

Enjoy the turkey hunt!

actually, Quaker boy has been sponsoring the program since its inception apparently. I was down there working for one of the fishing lure companies...

Turkey course

Yes, I was in the Friday course at the sportsman show and what killed me was the crappy little cafe with the $3.50 water, $3.00 coffee, and the 20 minute line up during a 15 min break.

All in all it was a good course but it could easly have been condenced to 2-3 hrs tops. It only took me 7 minutes to write the test (including the time to find my pen). The amazing part was that when they started the presentation after everyone handed in the test about 45 minutes later there were still a couple of guys writing:eek:

Not to be a prick but this 'test' was about as easy as they come.....and the questions....but don't get me started on some of the questions people were asking. Yes, you point the thin end out, and when you load it - brass end to the back - rant over!:p

LOl! It was the same Sunday! I have to admit though, if I plucked the turkey and found that sack of " fat" I probably would have thought it had a disease! LOL!!! Now I know it's a built in baster!! Loved that part!

We had about 7 guys still writing, and after all sheets were checked , the same 7 guys got called out to fix their mistakes ( sorry to say, I wouldn't want to hunt with them )

after a few weeks of the taking the said course..it,s a joke. .if someone can prove me wrong and say they failed the course id buy..all a beer here...

I hear ya! I was there on the Saturday. A couple of older Italian guys opted for the verbal test. One of them failed!!!
They took him outside and corrected him and passed him! Now that guy is going to be out in the woods next month without a friggin' clue. (How stupid do you need to be to fail that?!?!)
I call BS on this course, too. A money grab! Did ya notice that these guys used to work for the MNR? Not a bad idea to convince the gov't a course is necessary before allowing people to hunt these things and then get appointed to do the teaching. What's next? A coyote course? A grouse course? It's a lot tougher to hunt whitetails, imo. No course? Hummm... Gotta question the integrity of this and the OFAH.
Like I said in another thread: Shoot the ones with beards! Don't wear red, white and blue! I fukcing get it!

Exactly what I was thinking, plus the shopping channel tactics to buy their stuff. Conflict of intrest I beleive. Mine was in Cornwall last weekend and got a good 20 min snooze in.

I'm signed for the one here in Lindsay next month.
I hope it's before turkey season, Johnny! Get ready to snooze or take some "Trucker's Choice" amphetamines! :p
But, the MNR says ya can't hunt 'em if ya don't take the course!

All the posts are from ON, so a provincial requirement, obviously.
In BC we are just getting a general season for the first time, as the birds are migrating west. So this is all new to me. What sort of stuff was taught in the course?
Is it available online as a .pdf download?
Thanks

Get a copy of the US rag called Turkey call. Study the gear photos and read two articles. Congrats you are now a certified turkey hunter. (by Ontario standards) I took the course 5 years ago in Thunder Bay. Even to this day when I can't sleep I think of that day and zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Good job Momma Bear.
cheers Darryl
