GSG 1911 vs Ruger Mk III Competition

GSG 1911
Advantage: great trigger, looks great, functions like a 1911
Disadvantage: Alloy construction, crappy finish

Ruger
Advantage: Long barrel, reliable, all metal construction
Disadvantage: Space age looks, complicated dis-assembly, cant shoot left handed with the competition grip

Had a number of .22 but now only have the GSG. A lot of fun for a .22 pistol and with 40gr bullets it even has a decent amount of recoil.

Have a GSG, a Ruger MkII 5.5" bull barrel, and a Ruger MkIII 22/45 4.5" slab side barrel. Like 'em all.

I think you would have beat your buddy if you stayed with the right finger trigger.

Because of that, it slowed your mag changes.

Cool run though...always fun to speed blast with someone.

I have a wide variety of Marks and one GSG.

They all have their plus and minus...love them all.

The last thing I think of when I look at a Ruger Mk .22 is "Space Age Looks". Look at an old Luger and then the Ruger. If you can't see the family resemblance then you need a seeing eye dog to aid you in aiming....

There's a lot of info out there about how Bill Ruger loved the ergonomics of the classic Luger pistol. And how me faithfully incorporated those ergos with his Mk I and later Mk pistols. It wasn't until the 22/45 models that this design element was broken.

If you want "space age looks" then look at the old art deco 50's and early 60's Whitney Wolverine. I suspect the looks of that old classic was the inspiration for the currently sold Beretta NEOS which shares so much of the styling of the Wolverine.

For cheezy grade B science fiction movie material look at the Walther P22 and the new Ruger SR22. They both remind me of Transformer toys that with a few twists and bends should fold out into little gun size walk around robots.

For the GSG I actually find that the fit and finish is pretty good. Not a fan of the rather prominent lettering in the slide but at least it's crisply done. Don't the use of alloy for the slide too much. With a .22 there isn't enough recoil impulse to move a full size all steel slide the size of a 1911. So alloy or half slides is a fact of life with .22's

I have owned the GSG 1911 and yes it worked fine but it is not in the same league as the Ruger. The Ruger will last you a lifetime and the GSG I am sure will not.

If you want to hve fun and not spend much buy the GSG. If you want something that is quality and will last you a lifetime buy the Ruger.

In my mind it is just that simple.

I can't tell you about the GSG, but the Ruger is a very accurate pistol: you can put 10 out of 10 on a 8.5X11 inch paper at 50m.

I was on the GSG, my buddy on the Ruger

We tried this again a few months later, my GSG was dirty and the buffer was worn out, it was jamtastic and the ruger won every time.


I do believe the ruger will outlast the GSG, but I still like them both, especially the competition model ruger

I have a GSG and had shot a Ruger. GSG though quality issues still exists, but with a good distributor, I would say 7/10. Ruger as it is, maybe 7.5/10. Not sure though how the service is in case of quality/parts. One thing for sure, they make good guns. Ammo wise, Ruger is not as picky as GSG. Fun factor: GSG by a full notch. Aftermarket parts: GSG by 2 notches. Reliability: Ruger tops. Accuracy: Ruger by half to full notch. Overall Rating: EVEN or Ruger by maybe half a notch.
