I figure, I already have a nice 1911, I like the trigger, how it looks, how it fits. Its already registered, and in my possession, with its appropriate paperwork.

GSG makes those conversion kits. Basically take off your 1911 upper and put this one on, load the mag, insert, rack the slide and shoot. And mags are pretty cheap.

But, any real negatives? Or any that a small amount of gunsmithing can't fix?

I asked this very question at my LGS just last night. I was told very nicely there are other ways of wasting money! A GSG is aroud $ 375-400 and a upper is $250. Not a huge saving. Also you do not have to swap uppers all the time.

they are onl $229 :) whole pistol is $360. Plus registration, transfer, waiting etc. Plus I really like my current 1911. To me its not that part, but if it will be reliable, fit well etc.

I love the gsg 1911 as a whole, for the price of it, I'd suggest scoping on ee and getting a whole used one, I think it's worth the extra bit to have the option of using just the slide or tricking them both out

the problems with the conversion:

- if you run a full strength 23# mainspring, the 22LR upper will often have a difficult time cocking, even with HV ammo.

- you need to fit them to a lot of frames

- you need to run them wet, and this plus typical 22LR ammo, your lower will get filthy.

Problem with getting a full GSG;

- the build quality and feel is atrocious, though they shoot reliably and fairly accurately.

- they feel awful in your hand until you break the edges on the safety and controls

- the finish is like cheap tremclad paint.

you're right.
i always keep & maintenance my firearms to be in top shape but i hate the PAINT on these GSG, it just comes off by itself

I've said it before GSG is built like a mediocre pellet gun. They're still a blast a plink with, mine never jams unless it gets really dirty.

see, I get that, its cheaply made, but it IS cheap :)

I want a reliable fairly accurate semi auto .22. I don't want the M&P.

rgv, you may have swayed me into just getting the whole gun.
