I had a good look at him today, so I think I can guess his weight quite close. Looking at the picture what would you say he weighs?

I am no judge of bears but before H4831 satisfies our curiosity I'll GUESS 275-325. If it was a 500 pound bear and the hide looked that way on both sides I am thinking bruce would have used the rifle and not the camera. Beauty animal to be sure.

I agree gatehouse but I think that they look bigger then they are seems like something is happening with shadow in the pic.

To be sure I'd have a long hard look at that black splotch behind that bear before I pulled the trigger.

And the winner is---------drum roll---------Gatehouse!
It shows what pictures can do. I was close and had a perfect view and I would say 135 pounds.
In fact, if I was to say over or under 135, I might say under.
He was actually little more than a ball of fur! It sure was nice sleek, shiny fur, though.
When I looked at the picture I couldn't believe either, what the picture did for him/her.

Fur is sleek and thick, his hide is prime and he looks girthy in the pic, but the ears don't lie, and there is no crease down the forehead..

500 lbs! I'd say I've only seen one or 2 500lb black bears, and then there was no mistaking that whatever they weighed, they were BIG bears.;)

Then again- I've never weighed a bear, living or dead.:p

they are reluctant to get on the scale when alive.

nice photo....always enjoy good photos...yup those Mickey Mouse ears can tell a LOT..nose is long and narrow...and although good coat..those "furballs " can be decieving lots of hair not meat and bones..

great view...well done GATE..

Drache, that's also a young bear. First pic he looks promising, but by the 3rd and 4th it's clear he aint no monster. Big ears, and long legs.

(Small skull, belly and chest small)

No pronounced crease in his forehead..Nice looking bear, thiough. Give him a few years.

That too, is a good explanation.
Years ago some archers shot a huge bear. They were not inexperienced hunters and they got it in a vehicle and got it weighed. The guesses were all around the 500 pound mark, but the scales showed 300 and change.

I wasn't going to go higher than 250lbs on the first bear- good thing!

Drache, what happened to that bear in the second pics? He starts of impressive, but seems to shrink with every photo after that.....

Meh, I'd shoot either bear though. :p How many pepperettes can a guy eat in a year?? :yingyang: :D
