Guess his weight

Drache, that's also a young bear. First pic he looks promising, but by the 3rd and 4th it's clear he aint no monster. Big ears, and long legs.

(Small skull, belly and chest small)

No pronounced crease in his forehead..Nice looking bear, thiough. Give him a few years.

That's why I posted more than just one picture :D

I must admit though he was big for his young age (ie Long and Tall). I've come upon more than my share of black bears our hunting (within 50 yards) and they seemed smaller compared to this guy :D

I don't eat bears and I have been through the rug bit, so now that they are treated as a game animal, I don't shoot them.
I used to shoot bears when they were considered a bad predator and were shootable on sight, anytime they were seen.
By the way, they still enjoy newly born moose calves and baby deer, just as much as they ever did.
Some years back the Saskatchewan game management people couldn't understand why the moose were not increasing in the Cumberland House area in the north, when every condition was perfect for them. They first found out the calf survival rate was much too low, so they immediately blamed wolves. However, after very careful, scientific studies, it turned out to be black bears killing the baby moose.

Yesterday we were driving south out of fsj and spotted a road killed cinnamon bear in the ditch. Parked in a safe place and went back to take a look. The glance as we went by showed very large prominent ears and we expected a small bear. Turned out to be a very nice mature boar with the fuzziest mickey mouse ears ever and the tighest curled fur. Not a huge bear but shootable and would have made an exceptional rug in his prime. After bruces post I wanted to take some pics and measurements but just as the tape and camera were about to come out a very disturbed mountie showed up and decided for some reason that standing 10 yrds off the highway in the ditch was not allowed (I guess we were drawing attention and distracting drivers). Any way point being that it is as easy to misjudge both ways.

Thanks Bruce for helping to keep us all skeptical of our initial impressions

I had a good look at him today, so I think I can guess his weight quite close. Looking at the picture what would you say he weighs?

Couple years back my daughter took me to her school for parents / interview thing and then she said to teacher that her father is hunter and all of us go to hunt in the winter and teacher's face was pale. My daughter again explain that one winter when we were all camping / hunting at our property then a bear attacked us and teacher's face was yellow. Then teacher ask her that what we did with the dead bear, my daughter said - same thing he was going to do to us - we eat him . And the teacher's face was red, that's the last time I went to her school

When our son went to meet the kindergarden teacher she asked how he was doing. "Oh I'm sad". He Replied. "My Dad's dog was really old so Grampa shot it and buried it." She was caught off guard to say the least. :)

Nice pics guys.
Bruce's looks like a Black Lab cross with German Shepard almost, maybe some Collie tossed in for that long nose.

Talking to Nugget last night, just back from bear camp up north. They had quite the time with a 5 footer that refused to leave camp. They ended up putting a tag on it after they chased it out of the back of his Duramax! Talk about a problem bear in the making.
