The DESIGN of the things was a bit silly, but it seemed to have fit into the French military way of thinking.
The MATERIALS were excellent, as was the workmanship, finishing and the actual operation of the things.
I have a couple of Berthier rifles, '07/'15 types and they are truly beautifully-made and very smooth, far better than they had to be.
That said, to our way of thinking, the basic design is still silly. Three rounds, no safety, safe carry only with 2 in it......
Oh well, Napoleon didn't like rifles either.
