Hey guys,

Just completed my Black Badge, and will be shooting Standard division when I get back in August. I've got an STI Executive right now, and will be doing a little bit of work to it before I get up and running. I'd like some of your opinions on gear, though.

Holsters. I've searched for info on the Guga Ribas holster, and only found a bit, but everyone seems pretty happy with them. I know that Slavex ran one, anyone else have any more insight?

How about the Speedsec 5? I know that the CR Speed is also very popular.

Cost isn't that big of an issue - I've got the time, and I'd like to do it right the first time so I can avoid replacing it further down the line.

Belts - CR or Gugas, but CR seems to be the industry standard. Anyone have any experience with the Gugas?

Mag Pouches. The CR's are the staple of the IPSC community, from what I've read, but the Gugas' are far more adjustable. Ghost Universal are also popular. Any big advantages of one over another?

Who makes a good range bag?

Also, who makes the yellow timers? He's from around here, phone number ends in 1911.

Any other insights for a new IPSC shooter?

Thanks!

Brad

PM 757 and ask him about his Guga and his 1911. he loves it. it's the smoothest holster I've ever used. I love both of mine (Tanfoglio and Glock).

I use a CR and a Speedsec, but the Gugas is good too. Your choice.

Belts - CR are about the best.

I use CR but any of those you list are good.

I have a Shooters Connection bag but Ken Donovans bags are good too.

The Speed Timer's are mde by Jack Payne at RU Ready Electronics.

I've used both the CR Speed and Speedsec 5CW holsters (Glock, CZ and 1911s). Both are excellent and well priced.

The CR belts are awesome.

Love the CR mag pouches too....and they seem to be adjustable enough for most shooters.

Just my $0.02

Hey Brad...glad the course went well.

My humble opion...you can't go wrong with any of your choices...all great rigs.

My thoughts ,in no particular order:

Holsters

Guga - I have 3 of these.

Pro's - Infinatly adjustable, very secure. Lot's of colour choices to match your shoes ;) Build quality is top notch.
Cons - Most expensive of your list, takes a while to get it setup.
Note - If these holsters are not setup properly...the gun can really wobble (enough to make any RO paying attention nervous.

Speedsec - I have 2 of these.

Pro's - Most "snug" fit of any holster I've owned. Very easy to setup. I really like the locking lever. Big enough that if you start with the holster locked...it's dead simple to unlock it while you draw the gun (in one motion)
Cons - Not much to say hear...other then not as adjustable as some of the others.
Note - Probably my personal favourite on the list. Some guns with thumb rests will not fit...so if you have a thmb rest try one first.

CR Speed - Don't own one now, but was my starting rig

Pro's - Very secure and dead simple to setup. The muzzle cup is also a nice to have in certain situations that could cause you to bump your muzzle on a chair or prop.
Cons - None really. They have fallen out of fashion among those of us that must always have the latest and greatest...but that's hardly a con
Note - Best race holster for anyone starting out.

Ghost - Never owned one

I don't feel qualified to give a strong opinion. I have helped a few people set them up. They seem to have the snug fit of a Speedsec and the adjustibility of the Guga. Looks like a pretty sweet rig. I'm sure some other members can offer an opinion based on actual experience.

Limcat - I owned one of these

Pro's - No drag draw
Cons - Also...no drag draw. In the unlocked position...it pretty much just gravity holding it in.
Note - One of the first of this style of holster on the market...but a bad choice for your first race holster.

Note - Overall fit of the gun in the holster with any of the holsters that rest the grip (by the trigger guard) on the top portion of the holster will suffer if you undercut the grip at the trigger guard (to get a higher grip on the gun). It just makes them a little sloppier..and the gun will tend to rock a bit (front to back) They are still quite secure...just not as snug. I have personally noticed this with the Limcat, Speedsec and Guga

Pouches

CR - I have never tried the CR's, but they have a reputation as indestructable and appear to be the number 1 coice.

Guga - I have two sets of Guga's...They are very much like the holster...infinatly adjustable...but a pain to set up. They are also quite bulky. It's not fun using these if you start a stage lying down...but overall they are very good pouches.

Ghost - If I were buying new pouches...I would probably look at the Ghost pouches first. I've only tried them off a belt (at a vendor table) but they are very snug, have a great retention spring that should hold just about any mag, easy to adjust...pretty stealthy. I'm not sure how well they hold up...but if they prove to be durable...I think they may end up on the top of many people list.

Misc - I have also used Safariland and Limcat. Also good choices. The Limcats were the smallest pouches I've seen...but not all mags will fit (depends on the vertical grove in the mag) My old style factory 10 STI mags fit great...the newer style STI factory 10's wouldn't (they was a few years ago...and may have since been addressed)

Range Bag / Belt

Green Mountain Big Bag. - I'm the only person that you'll ever meet that hates these bags. Mine literally fell apart in 3 years. Not on my list anymore

Shooters Gear (Ken Donnavon) - It was a prize at EOHC's last level 3. It's one of the small ones...and I tend to use it as an ammo bag at 3 gun matches. Build quality is great...I pack this thing full of ammo boxes (I weighed it last time I topped it off...it was 62 lbs)...and it has not shown any wear. Ken is also a great guy to deal with (Shoots out of Barrie)

Shooters Connection - My main range bag. Just the right size, plenty of features, very strong. Excellent Range Bag

Belt - Any two piece belt that is stiff enough to secure your holster and pouches will do. I have a pair of CR's...they work great.

Good luck...see you on the range

Cr speed belts are top. I like my Gugas mag pouches, as I can use them with many different mags, just make sure you get the inserts which allow you to use them with single stack mags,...and tanfoglio large frame mags. CR speed mag pouches are also great,...spare parts that come with them allow them to be used with many different mags.

I used a Speedsec for my HK and STI , they were easy and had a wicked fast draw,...CR speed would be great as well. I am using a Ghost right now for my Tanfoglio stock2 and Limited Custom. Make sure the spring is not too light, and you adjust the little white plastic screws properly. I am used to it now, and I can get some very quick draws with it now, ...this weekend I hit a .78 in NS at an IPSC match, 2 A's,...but trashed the rest of the stage.

I have both a Ghost and a CR. Currently using the Ghost holster and CR pouches + belt. I can't decide which holster I like best....both are excellent rigs, but without a doubt the CR belt and pouches are the best I've used, and the most durable. That said; I prefer holsters that capture the muzzle, and the Guga-Ribas doesn't do that (had one and sold it). The Guga pouches have tons of adjustment built in, but I managed to break a couple of them so I opted for the CR's. Haven't been able to break any of those yet...

CR belts are a no brainer, although there are some others out there now that are pretty much the same.
mag pouches- I hated my CR ones. really really hated them. Love the Guga, but they are a tad bulky, and are designed for 21 round (or bigger) big stick mags. I keep meaning to make a spacer to stuff in the bottom to let my Tanfoglio mags stick up higher. I also took a belt sander to the mag pouches, when apart, so that I could get them to tighten up deeper. I found the insert to be useless. a quick sanding and I can carry every type of mag in there without needing to put in or take out spacers.

How much material did you need to remove, Slavex?

And does anyone know the price of the Guga holster and mag pouches? 2Alpha hasn't emailed me back yet. :)

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Brad

Tonnes of good info here already, so I'll keep my comments limited.

#1: New Shooter: AVOID minimalist holsters without basic retention like the plague. (ie limcat) When I sold JR, they had a micro (like a speedsec and limcat) and macro (like a CR). Whenever a new shooter bought the micro, I inevitably heard about them having the gun drop out. They must be set at proper canted angles and must be locked whenever not drawing. This is one thing you don't need to be thinking about when you're learning.

#2 CR Speed does make a range bag and we stock it....It's very nice. SRP $196.46

Since CR is our representative line - a little extra plug. The Universal holster handles a mess of different guns, so if you're just starting out - in say a CZ, you can later use the same holster for the STI or Tanfoglio you later purchase. The Versa Pouches fit every mag known to man. (OK, not desert eagle...) - they come with inserts so you can set them up for single stacks 1911, CZ, tanfoglio, baby eagle, XD, Glock, Para, STI, etc. mags.

i have a early cr speed and the rest is JR stuff from freedom ventures.
Good stuff, 3 of us set up withthe same rig , never had any issues, its fast anbd easy to use.
price was good too!

I have a Sickenger as well, tried it for my Elite II years ago. never liked it. used a Ghost instead.
as for my mag pouches, I only removed maybe an 1/8 of an inch total in material. 1/16 from each half.

Hey Freedom,
I emailed CR about whether the holster will fit a Desert Eagle .50AE and they said "yes, with a bit of work". Do you know how much work? Have you fitted one before? Can it be easily switched back to fitting a Glock?

Sorry for the thread hijack.:)
