Guide for Recoil Spring

A question for all you gun-techs/smiths out there. I was recently at a gun show. I was looking to get into a .45 pistol and was talking to a smith about it. One thing he showed me was a device that looked like a guide for a recoil spring. He mentioned that this object could make a .45 recoil feel like a .22. When I shook it, I could feel that it was filled with liquid (mercury) and ball bearings. Questions:

1) have I assumed correctly that this device is a recoil spring guide?
2) If so, does it drastically reduce the recoil?
3) Further to above, am I able to get this item (that looks like a long "point-less" nail) for various pistols like: .45 1911, CZ 9mm, Beretta ect.?
4) lastly, where would I purchase this recoil absorbing items if I live in the Vancouver area?

thanks for your assistance!

yes it is a mecury filled guide rod, and no it does nothing to recoil in any meaningful way. I've tried all the recoild compensating devices you can get for pistols and the only one that does much of anything is a properly fitted compensator, with the proper ammo.

STEVR, what I have read tells me these things work. With that said, would I buy one? No, and the reason is all of the calibres you mention are very controllable without it. When I first fired a 45acp I thought it was a beast and now it is nothing but a gentle push to me. I am sure what takes people back with semiautomatic pistols is the violence of the slide action, you will get used to the 45acp. In other words, do not waste your money. Regards, Richard :D

if these things actually worked you'd see the top shooters in the USA using them and you'd see them made for big guns like the Desert Eagle semi auto's. strangely enough you don't see them in either of the above examples.
