Just picked up a 1911 from the EE, took it to the range, shoots great except there were a couple failure to chambers. It seemed almost as if the slide was getting caught on something, it did seem to work itself out eventually. However before the range I had swapped out the 2 piece guide rod for a one piece from one of my other 1911s. Could the different guide rod have caused the issues or might it just have been the ammo or my grip?

Did it "almost" close, and then stop about 1/16th out of battery? If so, it might just need cleaning. Lead bullets can sluff off lead and bullet lube in the area of the throat causing the case to prevent the slide from closing fully. Shooting jacketed bullets can sometimes get rid of the deposits, otherwise you need to clean the chamber carefully. Unless there was some unusual machining done to the slide/frame it's highly unlikely thst swapping out the FLGR for a real one will cause any issues - assuming the spring used was correct for the load.
