Gummy Nylon 66

I have recently aquired a Nylon 66, and I have to clean it as the previous owner oiled the action prior to storing it, and the guts are pretty gummed up.

I have heard the horror stories about disassembling a Nylon 66, and winding up with a collection of parts suitable for individual sale. As such, I don't want to pull it apart any farther than the average guy (me)would be capable of reassembling.

My question is this:
Would spraying the action with a gun cleaning solvent solve my problem?
And as most solvents have a 'Don't use on plastic!' warning, are there any recommendations as to which solvent to use?
 
Don't believe all those horror stories. It is no problem to disassemble a nylon 66. Just go slow the first time. I've done it many times now and its a piece of cake. There are some very good videos on youtube for this. Watch them first, and then decide if your capable of doing it. Once I have rifle completely apart. I take the stock to the bathtub. Water as hot as you can handle and spray with Fantastik all purpose cleaner, and an old toothbrush. I've tried many different cleaners and this seems to work very well for me. Just don't use the Fantasik with the bleach added! All the little parts go into a plastic bucket and get scrubbed up good. Don't lose anything down the drain!! Let the parts dry out really well and re-assemble dry. Take her outside and enjoy your nylon 66! Easy as that. If you can't get it back together, I'll buy it from you. LOL But really, watch the videos and go slow. Hope you get it all cleaned up and shooting well again. Let us know. Good luck, Toni.
 
With the safety on, and the gun fired, I took the bbl off. My intention was simply to clean the bbl, and wait for a response to this message, but the bolt slid forward. Apparently the ejector(?)on the left side of the gun was loose. The bolt hasn't come completely forward and out, but I can't get the ejector back in. Any help?
 
Bolt is still in the receiver? Good. Push it back and re-install the bolt handle. This will hold the bolt back and allow you to put the ejector back in. Re-install the barrel. Once the barrel is back in place (remember the "shim" that goes with the barrel band has to face forward) you can remove the bolt handle and replace the receiver cover. Don't forget the ejector, that little bugger can fall out easily. Once cover is back on, replace bolt handle and function test. Works good? Great! Now watch those vids, and take that baby completely apart! You'll be happy you did, and so will your rifle!! Good luck, and keep us posted. All the best, Toni.
 
Sorry, I forgot. Next time you take the rifle apart, do it in the UN-fired position. I mean leave the rifle cocked. Makes it easier for ya.
 
I think I just managed to monkey the thing back together. THe trigger sear was keeping the bolt from going back. I think I'm going to watch the video now!

The music is irritating, but the videos are ok.

If you're uncertain, I recommend just going to the point where the trigger guard is removed, as once done, you can reach pretty much every part that would require cleaning.

DO NOT LUBE afterwards! The gun is designed to run "dry", and all lube does is collect dirt. I just cleaned one that someone had loaded with spray-on white lithium grease - what a mess!
