Hey was looking for some opinions here on what rifle to choose. I have chosen 243 as my multi purpose first caliber, as southern ontario needs 270 or lower. I am looking into the savage axis 2 xp in stainless. Wondering if there are any other guns you guys have in mind. I am also open to buying used. (will be used for white tail, coyotes, fox)

EDIT: i am really thinking of stainless. Also i will use the gun when i go to northern ontario, would guess max distance of a shot 300m , most common 100 ish meters. One gun only, im in university right now

All good advice above..... but it's hard for me to think of one cartridge that will do all of those three animals...

.243 is closest.... but, if I were in your shoes, I'd buy a .270 and a .223.... and I would avoid the axis...

Forget the Axis and buy something better, you wont regret it. Remington 700 and winchester model 70 are easy to find used and at reasonable price. They will last for ever and keep their value unlike the cheap savage.

Oh and go for a .270 instead, much more versatile!

243, 270 really does not matter at this point. Get a rifle that is comfortable to hold and point and lots of ammo and shoot it as much as you can afford to.
That is my 2 cents. You will eventually upgrade you equipment as you become more proficient with it.

If you are hunting Deer in Southern Ontario you will need a Bow and/or Shotgun to hunt. (2017 Controlled Shotgun Hunts, Nov 6th-12th or Dec 4th-10th)
Otherwise, since you have a 243, one of the Model Sevens in 308 would be my choice.

Look for a used axis on the equipment exchange. Stick with the 243. It's a very inexpensive way to get going. After hunting a few years upgrade if you see a reason to.

Don't buy an Axis... spend your money on a quality used rifle... they are not hard to source in .243.

You are only allowed to hunt small game with a caliber no larger than .275 in Southern Ontario but there is no caliber restriction if you are hunting any big game of course during open season and in a rifle zone.
