Gun club required to buy restricted

Hi, Ive done some extensive research on this so far but want to know the stance of this website.

I know some online gun stores will allow you to purchase a restricted firearm without being member of a gun club. I was told that it was loophole in Ontario where you only need to a name of a gun club you "plan" on joining. Since you dont need a ATT as your receiving it by mail, you dont need to be member of a club or be a collector to receive it.

Well my question on here is, If you buy from someone on this website and are going through the process of transfering ownership, do some sellers want/need you to be a member of a club?

I think you'll find this is related to the CFO re a long term ATT. It has nothing to do with firearms vendors.

If you are purchasing a Restricted in Ontario, you DO NOT have to be a member of a club. That includes Vendors and Private sales on the EE.
 
In Ontario, it is a CFO imposed requirement that the purchaser of a restricted firearm be a member of a gun club unless your license states that you are a collector. If you are a collector, you will not be able to get a LTATT to transport that firearm to a range to shoot it.
The reasoning by the CFO is that if you are not a collector, the only other reason you can have to purchase a restricted firearm is to target shoot with it....you stated that on your license application. Since you can only target shoot with a restricted at an approved range you must therefore be a member of a gun club otherwise you would have no valid reason to purchase the gun since you cannot target shoot without being a member of a club.

In the past is has been acceptable to state that you are considering joining such and such a club because the CFO realizes that it may take some time to go through the process of obtaining a club membership. I do not know it this is still the case however.

In Ontario, the process of obtaining a LTATT is done by your club and not by you personally.

Hope the info helps and anyone else, please correct me if I've made some errors.

There's some faulty logic by the CFO here. An IPSC shooter could shoot matches at several clubs and never belong to an of them.

In Florida, I shoot sporting clays tournaments every weekend for 4 months and don't belongto a club there.

Why would it be any different here?

I don't think you can get a LTATT in Ontario with out being a member of a club since it is the club which gets you your LTATT.

It is not just IPSC shooters. I can go as a guest to another club & take my handguns . As long as I have a valid LTATT which requires belonging to a " Home club " that requests the LTATT from the CFO.

You have to remember that you are dealing with the government and "logic" goes right out the window with these guys!!

This is totally False. In Ontario you DO NOT need to be a member of any club to PURCHASE a restricted.

I agree. However, someone posted recently that you should apply directly to the CFC for a LTATT after joining a club.

Most ATT are short. Like when you first pick up your restricted from the dealer to your home.....thats it.

When you join a club, You are able to apply for a long term ATT that allows you to take your Restricted to any approved range in Ontario. A short term ATT doesn't allow for that.

OK... Lets rephrase.
In Ontario you DO need to be a member of a club to Transfer a restricted.

When the transfer is started the CFO will ask for which club the purchaser belongs to. I do not know of anyone who has successfully transferred a restricted gun in Ontario who stated that they did not belong to a gun club (or that they were actively considering joining such and such a club) when the CFO requests this information.

There is a difference between being a member and saying you are thinking about joining a club. Which was my point. In other provinces you Must be a member before buying a restricted. In Ontario you don't.

That is correct....you can use the line "I'm thinking about joining such and such a club" or "I'm presently searching for a club" which seems to satsify the CFO's request for club membership.
 
well ok... lots of confusing info on this thread. Just wondering as I will be buying a restricted firearm from the EE section here and since im currently NOT a member of any gun club if the CFO or RCMP will deny the transfer.
