Gun Dog Name: Update Page 13

Tikka is sleeping at my feet as I type this... when I named her I thought it was unique, I have since heard of a cat named Tikka, see on a few posts up and saw a Tikka retrieving pheasants on Canada in the rough... now that was funny watching the show with my dog in the room, every time they said "Tikka" and whistled, my dog would perk up and look at the TV.

I have always struggled with female name for dogs, male are not so bad, my father named his beagles Butcher (butch) and Chaser, His father had one named Roamer. These are all perfect names for beagles. So maybe if you want something unique, get your head away from guns per say and think about what this dog will be doing in the field.

Runner, Scout, Fowler, Gunner (Gunny), Twister, Birder, Flash, Flusher...

I had a black lab, a male, many years ago I named "Nitro". His registered name was taken from two sources. First was where I first started waterfowling as a kid, Luther's Marsh, and second was my favorite ammo way back then(late 70's) when lead was allowed, the Remington Nitro Mag. So I registered him as Luther's Nitro Mag Express and called him "Nitro". Just a thought but you could combine your faves?!;)

This is my favorite pic of him.

We have a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever on the way and are in the same situation.

I picked the name 'Angus' but the GF won't let me use it.

Here's a few: Briar, Drake, Gunner, Gunny, Gauge, Hook, Hunter, Jack, Jake, Jax, Remy, Skeet...

Nice looking pup, i`m jealous. Most of my dogs got named at home on the spur of the moment, from looks or mannerisms. My last gold retriever was called Rock.

Here are my 3, the Britanny is named "Drake", the chocolate lab is named "Marzipan" or Marz or Pain for short, and the boxer is the baby, he's only 9 months old and named "Oscar".

Im reading the book 'Gun Dog' by Richard A. Wolters and one of the things he recommends is keeping it short and simple - usually a single syllable - and to make sure that the name doesnt phoenetically conflict (sound similar) to any commands you intend to teach it.

Ie. he made the mistake of naming his dog, Beau when he wound up training it with the 'WHOA!" command. Just makes things confusing for the dog.

Call it Jim.

On post #5 I posted a picture and a few details on our present dog. Prior to her, we had a German Wirehair Pointer we named Bristles because of the nature of his facial hair, Bris for short. One more name, our Daughter and Son In Law named their farm dog Chevy, ;)"Like a rock".
