Gun for coyote and, occasionally, deer as well in S Ontario

My choice would be 270 win over a 270 WSM just because the WSM is too expensive (double the cost) for the extra fps you get not to mention my shoulder doesnt need more recoil.

The 270 restriction had nothing to do with ballistics, or safety. After WWII there was tons of 303 rifles and ammo available dirt cheap and people were running around shooting the hell out of every stop sign and hydro pole so the County's passed bylaws allowing 270 or less so the guys with the 303 had to stop. Simple as that.

My thoughts would be the .270 WCF rather that the .270 WSM. There are better cartridges for what you are asking and a lot of them mentioned above, .243, 6.5X55, .260, some classics, .250-3000 and as always the....

260 Rem or 243 win. I have both. 270 win. Would do you fine and much cheaper to shoot unless you hand load The .270 wsm
260 is a beauty.
Also my buddy shoots a .220 swift with 60 gr bullets for deer and yotes and he doesn't have to chase either of them. From what he's told me the deers legs go out and they drop straight down. I know he's took a few and not lost any to my knowledge.
Good luck

while i wouldn't doubt it the counties didn't pass the rules the mnr did. Why was it only the southern counties that were effected? I thought all the gun toting hillbillys are up north:nest:

oh yeah of the two people i know that shoot 20 plus coyotes a year one uses a 25-06 custom savage and loves it to death, he also loads all his own though. the other uses a 243, while not there go to deer guns they have each also bagged deer with them.

rocco what put your buddy onto the swift, I bought mine used on a lark and have grown to love it. its like a laser out to 200 4" low at 300 with a 200 zero with 50g bullets. mind you if buying new i might have got a 22 250 just for the half price ammo. i guess i could step up and load my own as well:p

So I guess the 7.62 x 39 has no chance of becoming the next favoured round for coyote in southern Ontario?... I would so like to shoot a few with that caliber.

it depends on your terrain up here in Huntsville area we use a good strangle chocked shot gun, mine is a double barrel 12 gauge! Works great on fox and rabits TOO.

Luke I don't know how he actually ended up with the gun but it was allegedly put together by a minister in Stayner Ontario who was a shooter.
It is a Mauser action with a long barrel "26 an absolutely beautiful gun. Shoots very well.

I don't want to highjack the thread

personaly if i had a 338 win mag on my truck seat and if i seen a coyote, it would be a dead coyote. i wouldn't be worried about hurtin the coyote too much with too big a gun

I would think 270 WSM is a bit noisey for my taste 223 or @ most 243 for down here.
Good luck fun no matter what you choose.

We usually use 223 for yotes, but I had purchased a 25-06 for my son to use for whitetail, and we have been using it for coyotes this winter. It has been great....flat shooting, fast, and more bullet weight options for deer than a 243. That being said, my Dad always said there are only 2 types of guns....a 243 and a shotgun.

To the OP the .270wsm is legal to use in the areas you have mentioned. As you can see there are some better/other choices you should take into consideration. but if the .270wsm is what you have and you want to use it you s/b good to go for both coyotes and whitetails!
IMHO look into some of the calibers mentioned above stick with something common and realitively inexpensive to shoot. If you hunt coyotes for very long your gonna shoot lots of ammo. It gets expensive and supplies of the load you like tend to get harded to find later in the season unless you reload. JM 2 cents

If you're planning on going for 'yotes during the big game seasons, you'll be restricted to rifles with less than 400 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. Don't know what to recommend when considering this restriction, maybe a smarter user can chime in? Other than that, I'd recommend a .243 for dual purpose use, or maybe a .308 depending on your views of coyote pelts.

No restriction during big game season for what rifle you can use for coyotes.... not that I am aware of anyways.....
