I recently read a chilling article on the possible developments of Putin's actions, give it a read, very concise and to the point analysis of various ways events will unfold. Here's the link: http://www.vox.com/2015/6/29/8845913/russia-war

Anyway, this got me thinking that I really should learn how to use a gun and what better way to learn than to own? I need to go through al the steps and get my PAL and maybe RPAL but for the time being I want to figure out what gun to get since they cost a lot and I should start saving up in advance. I have been looking into the non restricted selection (restricted seems too much of a hassle) but since I know very little about guns I could use your guys' help. I want a versatile gun that can be used for fun on the range and maybe for some hunting during the current peacetime but would also prepare me for stuff I would handle when I join the military should shtf due to Putin's warmongering. I want it to also serve as a good guerrilla/partisan warfare weapon in the highly unlikely event the US and Canada get invaded. I get this mindset might sound crazy but the referenced article combined with my close attention to the Russo-Ukrainian War due to being a Ukrainian-born Canadian really do paint a grave picture of the next few years. The situation today is identical to the months before WW1 but made worse with Putin's relaxed stance on nuke use (the doctrine considers the use of tac nukes as a battlefield tactic!). Given this, I want to be ready for whatever happens. If Canada goes to war alongside NATO allies, I will join the army. If we are invaded (however unlikely), I want to be set to put up resistance.

I am open to any suggestions but what I was thinking is getting a semi auto rifle since those seem to be more versatile than anything else out there and many are non restricted! As for caliber I was leaning towards 7.62x39 due to stopping power and the fact that it's what the Russian Army use (easy to scavenge off some Ruskies if shtf) while not discounting 5.56 NATO since our side would be using this and it would be good to get familiar with if I join the army (.50 beowulf mag loophole is nice too, dont think anything like it is available for 7.62x39). On the 7.62 side I see the options are limited with seemingly only the SKS and CZ858/VZ85 available and both limited in accessory compatibility (no rails) and general quality (old, worse condition) with the CZ958 maybe making things easier once it reaches us. On the 5.56 NATO side there is much more choice most of which are much easier to get accessories for due to many having rails. Obviously there's also the AR-15 but I'm not counting it because it's restricted (UGH!!!).

What do you think would best fit my needs? Feel free to throw in any suggestions, not just rifles and give specific model names. For rifles I would appreciate both 7.62x39 and 5.56 NATO options and suggest other calibers if you want, please give specific rifles with reasoning. Thanks and sorry for the long post.

VZ 58's pretty cool. If the lack of a rail is a huge deal for you then check out the CZ 958 in (I think?) Wolverine's dealer subforum. Dunno when it's supposed to arrive but it looks pretty cool. SKS has all kindsa crap on the market you can bolt onto it so that's a pretty good direction to go if that's what you're into. Interested to see what people say here. Also I think the XCR-L is available in 7.62x39, but it's kinda 'spensive. Anyway welcome and good luck.

^What September said.

I think you're overthinking the Russian situation, even if war does come between Russia and Canada, it would be in the form of Russian fighters and NATO fighters dogging it out above the Arctic Circle, and maybe a few conventional missile strikes on NORAD military installation up in the tundra. I highly doubt Russia has the will or resources right now to drop paratroopers onto Parliament Hill and engage us on a ground war. Ukraine was doable for them because it was right next door and Ukraine was militarily unready and lacked real allies. A military expedition across continents is a whole other thing. Beside, if things do get that bad, I think most of us would had been incinerated by nukes before we had our chance to fire one shot at a Russian soldier. There was a reason why the cold war was cold, and NATO and the Warsaw Pact never got into anything big enough to reach the doorsteps of their homes.

Anyway, this got me thinking that I really should learn how to use a gun and what better way to learn than to own? I have searched how I would actually go about getting a license and from what I gather I need to take a certified gun course before I can apply for a license. I then have to submit the paperwork and wait. The whole process seems to come out at just under $300. Additionally, I need to take a hunting course if I want to go hunting and there seems to be a whole bunch of legal bull#### to deal with if I would like to get a restricted gun like a handgun or AR-15 rifle.

I have been looking into the non restricted selection but since I know very little about guns I could use your guys' help. I want a versatile gun that can be used for fun on the range and maybe for some hunting during the current peacetime but would also prepare me for stuff I would handle in the military should #### hit the fan due to Putin's warmongering and serve as a good guerrilla/partisan warfare weapon should (god forbid) the US and Canada be invaded. I get this mindset might sound crazy but the referenced article combined with my close attention to the Russo-Ukrainian War due to being a Ukrainian-born Canadian really do paint a grave picture of the next few years. I am open to any suggestions but what I was thinking is getting a semi auto rifle since those seem to be more versatile than shotguns, single shot/bolt action rifles or obviously black powder rifles. Revolvers, pistols and such seem to be too much of a hassle due to being restricted. As for caliber I was leaning towards 7.62x39 due to stopping power and the fact that it's what the Russian Army use (easy to scavenge off some Ruskies if shtf) while not discounting 5.56 NATO since our side would be using this and it would be good to get familiar with if I join the army. On the 5.56 NATO side there is much more choice like the Type 97 and my favourite from research, the Tavor (pricey though), all of which are much easier to get accessories for due to many having rails. Obviously there's also the AR-15 but I'm not counting it because it's restricted (UGH!!!).

What do you think would best fit my needs? Feel free to say I'm "wrong and should not ignore shotguns" for instance or if you agree that the best choice would be a semi auto rifle in 7.62x39 or 5.56 NATO, please give specific rifles with reasoning. Thanks and sorry for the long post

just buy bbgun for yourself , when Put In will knock your door you can commit suicide with your bbgun .

Hopefully you just the TROLL

Regardless of the reason, always good to be prepared to defend yourself and others so get your PAL and RPAL IMHO. If you are getting your PAL anyway, might as well get your RPAL, even if you don't use it it's good knowledge. I haven't found it that big a deal to deal with restricted and in a real SHTF scenario, who cares about restricted rules and mag limits anyway, use what you have.
All the old Milsurps, SKS, Mosin, VZ24, K98, Lee Enfield, etc, work very well so don't discount them. CZ858, VZ58's and SKS's are excellent reliable semi-autos but for old stuff I would rely on my Mosin sniper. New stuff I would rely on my CZ SP01 shadow handgun and my AR, Sig SSG3000, and a good shotgun.

Peep dis homie yall need to cop a AR. Dont be messin wit no wackass 762X39 cuz dis bullet strait up weak. Da russinas aint even use dis busta bullet. Da AR in 5.56 strait up ill.

Riggseven, mate, I'm aware Ruskies actually invading US and Canada boots on the ground is unlikely. Canada going to war in Europe along with NATO allies however is very likely as things stand. I want to learn how to operate guns ahead of signing up for the army in just such a case. The home defense/guerrilla warfare part is just a hypothetical.

SEP7EMBER10, of course I do need firearms education. I just want to figure out which gun I'd get once I get a license. Prices vary dramatically so I need to know how much to save up

War Song. Of course Russia boots on the ground in US/Canada is highly improbable currently. However the possibility of full scale war in Eastern Europe is the highest it has ever been. If you understand that displays of power is the only thing keeping Russia together under Putin you will realise that this is the only logical next step for Putin. As for nukes if you read the linked article in my OP you will see that Putin believes that a war fought in part with tactical nukes is winnable. This is a madman ready to go all in to make Russia and himself great.
