Gun Newbie Wondering What Gun to Get

Chas 59, isn't RPAL really invasive? You have to constantly carry a metric buggerton of paperwork with your gun the lack of which will get you arrested. You have to register the gun and your criminal record is checked everyday (even rapists don't get surveilled as much). From what I can see in rifles only AR-15 is worth the hassle. About handguns I keep hearing the saying that they're just a tool to get to your rifle.

Ok, paranoia aside. You can insert SHTF, WROL and the zombie apocalypse into your scenarios here. Except bear defense, that is Tuesday only.
You want a x39, get a VZ/CZ. You need a 5.56/.223, get a T97 and get a shotgun, Mossberg 500/590 or Rem 870. The whole lot should cost you under $5000 with ammo and accessories. Cheap considering Putin would probably come with a few MIGs and Hinds.
Then get lots of ammo, find some property deep in the woods, away from civilization and get a large Wolverine flag!

War Song. Of course Russia boots on the ground in US/Canada is highly improbable currently. However the possibility of full scale war in Eastern Europe is the highest it has ever been. If you understand that displays of power is the only thing keeping Russia together under Putin you will realise that this is the only logical next step for Putin. As for nukes if you read the linked article in my OP you will see that Putin believes that a war fought in part with tactical nukes is winnable. This is a madman ready to go all in to make Russia and himself great.

:popCorn::popCorn: , do you like hemp coockies ???

I believe you are right about Putin, never trust anyone who doesn't smile. He seems to have a real 'hate on' for the west, the Americans especially. So, either the North Koreans, or the Russians, pick your poison but I would worry most about the Russians as they are a formidable enemy as history has shown.

Chas59, seriously reccomend giving the article in my OP a read. Frightening stuff. Situation today is pretty much analogous to the months before WW1 but to make matters worse Putin actually believes nukes have a use outside of an endwar apocalypse. The Russian nuclear doctrine outlines the use of tactical nukes as a legitimate battlefield strategy.

You should be frightened that you like many fail to see ww3 brewing right under your nose. Sure, US/Canada are likely safe from a ground invasion as the focus will be on Eastern Europe to begin but the Bering Straight is a short sliver of water to cross... Give the article I spoke of a read. A very logical, straightforward statement of facts from a reputable journalistic source.

I am sorry. Your fantasy life is alive and commendable but, in reality, with what you've said about your own ability with firearms, I don't think you, or for that matter most of the guys here, will be able to withstand a direct Russian invasion on our own. If the Russkies try and set foot here, you and your x39 will be the least of their worries!

Personally I'm more worried about The Hair winning the US elections. The way he talks, the US will piss off Putin, Iran, China and N. Korea before he even gets sworn in!

Wow! Some people like to diss other people. I hope the Original Poster gets a Pal then a Ukranian SKS from Corwin-Arms and has fun learning to shoot.
Although as the #10 reply by Dirt McGirt so plainly said: ''See here, friend, get an AR 15. Don't get a rifle that uses the obsolete 7.62X39 cartridge
which even the Russians no longer use. An AR 15 in 5.56 is the best.'' While Dirt McGirt may be correct, it is hard to beat the fun and inexpensive
SKS for learning about firearms.

Although my view of the situation is not as pessimistic as yours I certainly thought the article was an interesting and thought provoking read. Thank you.

Robert Nicholson, 7.62 is used to this day even by the newest 100 series AKs that will be standard Ruskie gear soon. As for the SKS, is the modified version that accepts AK mags readily available and how much more expensive would that be? Also, how is the SKS in terms of mounting scopes, lights etc? The CZ958 seems to be good for accessories but it doesn't accept AK mags. Might still go with 5.53 NATO since those guns accept .50 beowulf mags, 7.62 doesn't seem to have such a loophole. RPAL seems too much of a hassle to get an AR especially since you can only shoot it on a range.

Edit: Good one, thanks. I was wrong about the 7.62, it's the 5.45 the Ruskies use now and since we don't have anything chambered in that here as far as I could tell I'm starting to lean towards 5.56

I'm not too worried about a Russian invasion...

However if you want to do some shooting, get your course [PAL and RPAL...you can do them both at once], apply for your licenses and wait to get them. In the meantime, find a friend who owns guns and have him take you shooting [pay for ammo and maybe beers afterward] and see what you like shooting best.

For casual shooting I think an SKS is a good choice, or maybe a decent .22LR bolt rifle to learn the basics on. Restricted...a .22LR pistol or maybe a 9mm...again, you want something inexpensive to shoot while learning the basics. As time goes on you'll have a better idea of what you want.

Shooting is a great sport and pastime [gets expensive though] quite apart from any practical considerations of defense, or hunting or whatever.

Oh yeah...if you really want to do something about defending your community and nation, join the Reserves. You'll even get to do some shooting there...

Hey there, hope you don't feel bad about some of the replies you have gotten on this thread, some have gotten kinda rough.
Regarding your questions about the SKS: Many aftermarket parts and modifications are available to turn it into just about whatever you want.
However - for a beginner, you should get the least expensive SKS you can buy and learn to shoot it as is, especially because it sounds as if
you may want to train with it in a way that would duplicate army training in which case the rifle will get knocked about, which you will not
want to do to a rifle with a scope and other accessories. Have fun and stay safe.
