Gun protection oils

Does anyone use G96 nitro solvent for cleaning their bores? I find it works better than Hoppes#9.

Since the formula for Hoppes #9 was re-done about 30 years ago, about ANYTHING works better as a bore cleaner. But it still smells that same as it used to - so that must be important - not whether it actually works or not.

Is that good for reducing carbon adhesion as well? Lots of my guns get run pretty hard and if they are pre treated with S2S the carbon comes off really easily.

It does for me at least, but I don't run my guns hard generally. My 10/22 being the exception and it cleans up easier when the action is pre treated with the Rust Cure.
I got a gallon of the stuff from Amazon.ca for $77 bucks. :)

If you are using any product "specially" developed for guns... you are paying a huge mark up. It is all a very modern snake oil game.
Given the amount of industrial products available at a fraction of the cost, specially developed for corrosion and water repellency, on practically every material, ever... a quick run of the Googler would be in order.
Buy G96, Frog Lube, and everything else by the liter, as opposed to by the milliliter, as way less cost.

Hoppe's #9 , applied with a "Wool Skin". I have different skins in plastic containors in all my gun rooms
and in all my gun bags.

I keep an oily rag in my kit too, and wipe everything down at the end of the day (after drying it off). Nothing fancy - just gun oil on an old chunk of t-shirt. If things get really soaked, I'll take the barreled action off the stock and wipe it down and leave it open in front of the woodstove overnight.

Never had a spot of rust.

You will all be pleased to know that for years I have used nothing but automatic transmission fluid. A little on a four or five inch square of cotton goes a long way.

Never had a gun rust or fail to function properly.

Ted

Ted that is the golden question: which brand are you using for atf fluid for your guns?

We have been talking about it in the practical rifle thread but I think it is worth it’s own thread!
I’ve used all kind of stuff, but lately I’ve been using Balistol or renaissance wax! I always have a rag with oil on it in my kit that is in a ziplock bag and if the gun is wet, I dry it off and I go over it with the oily rag!
There is a bunch of new to me products that has been mentioned on the practical rifle thread, maybe if we can have links of where to get those products it would make life easier for all of us!
Balistol I get at Canadian tire and renaissance wax from Lee valley tools!
What are you using?

i used ballistol for stock (another product) and for firearms mechanic parts always clp break free (used already during my army time) and seems g96 is the new hype of clp.
