So we know why the gun registry exists, for criminals to register their firearms.

My question is barrel swaps... yes I watch CSI or used too. nat anymore

forensics for bullet matching are unique to the gun that fired them. Are criminals apt to legally obtain a firearm do a barrel conversion... so as they commit a crime in another caliber?

To me that looks like a loop hole in the registry for criminals...

I am definitely not anti-gun but either barrel kits should be registered too by the criminal so we know he committed a crime in that caliber or this proves yet again the futility of the gun registry to do any more good than harm law abiding citizens.

what do you think? just a fleeting thought.

What they don't say on CSI is that the ballistic pattern of a particular barrel will only remain unchanged for several hundred rounds. Afterwards, it becomes unrecognizable because of barrel wear. All a criminal has to do is go to the middle of nowhere and shoot a few boxes through the gun. Or you could probably achieve the same result by running a stainless steel brush through the barrel which would scratch up the rifling enough to change its unique pattern. All that CSI crap is out of the realm of fantasy.

Fed, I'm afraid you've totally missed the point of gun registration. It was never meant to affect criminals, only honest gun owners :roll:

A lot of handguns used by criminals are recovered at crime scenes.
Illegal guns are so cheap and available that they just ditch them rather than have to worry about getting caught with a "dirty" gun.
They just go out and buy a replacement.

In these cases the CSI gimmickry is redundant.

the firing pin identification is much more useful and reliable, but as mentioned before it is easy to replace the firing pin, or hit it with a file enough to change the profile.

Ballistic identification however is still useful, as most firearms are discarded after the fact, and matching the bullet/case to the gun provides a link to whomever handled the gun with whomever shot the bullet.

I doubt it`s quite as airtight as CSI and like shows have us beleive, but it is still useful in drawing links so that other evidence can close the case.

Better to watch American Shooter than CSI. The former deal with reality and the other.....
