Gun safe humidity

Being in Calgary I would say its okay without humidity control but just incase I have some of those dollar store damp traps

Bought these from eBay. Rechargeable dehumidifiers. They work well.

I use this. It works just fine. I have recharged it 5 times in 2 years.

Oddly enough the most dangerous time for humidity is in the summer if your gun safes are in the basement or garage. During those times the cool air in the basement becomes quite high in Relative Humidity. ESPECIALLY for those that live in southern Ontario or the two coastal areas. So it's during the summer that using tricks such as Golden Rods, damp traps and other devices is important. In the winter with the cool outside and thanks to heating our houses the RH is generally well down.

i would think under 30% RH is good, never measured it. I just keep a one tin of Drierite divided up
between cabinets/safes.
Colour indicator on it. Toss in oven every time they turn pink.

I should keep my guns in my cigar humidor and my cigars in my safe. Both always seem to be the opposite humidity of what I want. :)

I heat with wood stove so its usually quite dry inside, so i've never felt the need to control humidity inside my cabinet. Just store them clean and oiled with rem drylube and they have not rusted at all.

When I got a safe I did some research online and came up with 45-55% as being ideal. Any lower than 45% and it was claimed wooden stocked gun could risk drying out and cracking/warping. If there were no wooden stocked guns in the safe then this isn't a concern and the humidity could be lower. I notice a few people keep things quite a bit dryer than this. So far I haven't had any rust issues.

First thing to do is get a hygrometer to measure the humidity as is.

My gun room is so dry I have been using a humidifier lately. I am pumping it in there because Its a lounge area to and I'm drying up worse then my guns
